Sunday. ORizona, where 100 is the new 70. Swap meet, Naish Bash, master meditator monks, and perhaps an end to this heat?

DSC_3785-Edit
It’s another warm, blue-sky, light wind start to an early July day here in the Gorge. We have just enough gradients to throw a little wishy-washy into the forecast today. But before I get into that… remember that the Naish Bash continues on the sandbar today and that there’s a swap meet at Windance this morning, including a bike swap and donation dropoff with Anson’s Bike Buddies. Moving on to the forecast… Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

The 5am gradients (yep, I was up early) were .06 (pdx-dls), .01 (dls-psc), and .61 (eph-dls). These gradients leave me a bit concerned that the models’ conclusion of zero wind today is incorrect. I think we’ll see a light westerly breeze today, just enough to keep us from sweltering, but not enough to get many of us on the water for windsports. We’ll see the wind pick up a little late in the afternoon, likely to 7-10, but possibly to 10-13, strongest from Stevenson to Hood River.

Tomorrow’s forecast yesterday looked like east wind. Now we’re looking at W 5-10 to start off the week with 10-13 in the afternoon. Tuesday’s forecast is bouncing around a bit. As of right now, it looks like we’ll see 13-16 Tuesday morning with 22-25 Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday looks similar to Tuesday.

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was hanging out at Pacific Hermitage yesterday pulling weeds, drinking tea, and having interesting conversations that were generating insight. There’s nothing like an “aha” moment. Love ’em!

And then something occurred to me about learning and insight in general. Learning new stuff is awesome. It feels good, much like consuming delicious food, riding perfect dirt, or shredding unicorns on the Columbia. So many of us have a tendency, when we are studying or contemplating or reading, to run from one insight to the next without taking the time for any of them to sink in. We do this just as we run from one awesome outdoor activity to the next, or from one bar of chocolate to the next. We chase moments of learning without stopping to make them part of our permanent experience.

But if we don’t take time to soak up the learning and insight, it won’t last; learning, much like the taste of chocolate, can be ephemeral. So, next time you have an aha moment with a book, a lecture, or just in your own little head, stop and spend some time with it. Soak it up in multiple formats: think about it, write it down, draw a picture, Facebook it. Whatever works for you to absorb new information. Just don’t run off seeking the next aha moment until you’ve really incorporated the first one.

Cuz what we’re after here is real learning, right, not the rush that comes with a new insight…

Gorge Weather Forecast

Imagine that: it’s clear and sunny again this morning, and shall remain so all day. Low 70’s early. Upper 90’s or maybe even 100 this afternoon. Tomorrow looks like low 70’s early and mid 90’s in the afternoon. Tuesday looks exactly like Monday: hot, sunny, and hot and sunny. It’s possible this ridiculously Arizona-like weather will dissipate at the end of the week. No promises. No rainbows either.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m just gonna keep reminding you all weekend: it’s dry as a bone out there, and we are at IFPL 3. No moto riding. In addition, Kreps and SDS lands closed for the summer due to fire danger, so no more riding Whoopdee or Hospital Hill until further notice. In addition, the Gifford Pinchot is now at IFPL 2, so no moto riding there. If you are driving on forestland, you’ll need to carry a gallon of water and a shovel or a 2.5lb fire extinguisher and a shovel.

Upcoming Events

Today is Sunday, and like many Sundays, this one kicks off with a swap meet at Windance. As always, this is a great social opportunity. In addition, this swap meet is special because Anson’s Bike Buddies is taking part. If you have a used bike just taking up space, bring it on by. Anson’s will take it, give you a tax writeoff, fix it up, and give it to a local kid in need. ABB is trying out something new at this swap: a swap! Bring your old bike by and put it on consignment for a few hours (it goes without saying that you can shop for bikes too). If it doesn’t sell, you can take it home with you, or you can donate it and clear up space.

Also today: the Naish Bash (kite n’ board demos and meet n’ greet with pros) at the Sandbar. Double Mountain’s street party, 12-6. Ping pong at 10am at the Hood Rivery Armory. Pickup touch rugby at 3pm at the Mosier School. Casual bike ride with the folks from Mountain View at 5:15pm. Four community yoga classes: 9am at Crossfit HR and at Yoga Samadhi. 4pm Christ-centered yoga (aka YogaFaith) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles. 6pm at Root Down Yoga in Hood River.

Tonight at 6:30, Luong Por Liem, Abbot of Wat Nong Pah Pong Monastery in Thailand, will be at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon for a meditation and talk. This is a Very Big Deal – Luong Por Liem is considered to be one of the greatest living meditation masters in Thailand, and he is an absolute delight to be around, as are the other monks who will be in town this evening. I highly recommend checking this out if you have any interest at all in meditation or Buddhism.

Have an awesome day today!
