Sunday. More wind. Less convection. This is good. Let’s play!

The weather picture looks promising today, with blue sky over the central Gorge and a well-defined, very solid marine layer visible both to my own two eyes and to observers of the satellite image. The pesky upper level low that’s been causing the high clouds and thunder has moved on, and that leaves us with a more stable wind picture. Gradient at 6am were .13 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc), leading me to believe you’ll find the most wind at Doug’s-Avery again today. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

Expect mid-teens through the whole Gorge first thing this morning as the desert takes some time to warm up. By midday, we should be seeing fairly steady 25-29 from Mosier to Doug’s, maybe Avery too. Models suggest the wind east of Avery will back off, or at least not increase, as the day goes on, leaving Maryhill and Arlington in the teens. Swell and Hood River are the big maybes today, not so much for wind speed, but more for wind quality; with marine clouds pushing past Hood River, the wind will likely be gusty at these close-to-home beaches. That said, 24-27 is likely by early afternoon. And while I’m at it, there’s a pretty good chance of 28-32 at Rowena/Doug’s mid to late afternoon. Stevenson, under the clouds, will likely remain in the gusty 13-16 wind range.

See below for details.

Tomorrow sees an upper level low drop into eastern Washington. That’s going to destabilize the atmosphere a bit and make the wind gustier, less reliable, and more difficult to predict. That said, it looks like we’ll see 15-18 for Dawn Patrol with 22-25 by early afternoon, strongest near Hood River.

Tuesday will probably suffer from the effects of afternoon thunderstorms. That said, expect 10-13 to start and 21-24 in the afternoon, strongest from Swell to Doug’s with Stevenson likely to join in the fun too.

Random Morning Thoughts

My god, the world is changing fast. Marijuana is legal less than a mile (as the crow flies) from where I’m sitting. Get this: I can see legal marijuana from my office. Halfway across the world, the people of Ireland just voted to legalize marriage between two people, without respect to gender. This happened in a nation where 84% of people identify as Catholic, and only 7.6% of people claim to have no religion. The referendum passed with 68% approval. Wow!

Marriage is, or at least should be, the government’s official recognition of love. And here’s the thing about love: it’s an emotion, and if it’s going to arise in response to someone, it’s going to arise. You can’t stop it. I can’t stop it. Laws can’t stop love. Beliefs can’t stop love. Love will happen regardless of our intellectual thoughts about a person, their gender, their actions or anything else.

I don’t think anyone out there is against love, per se. But there are people who judge the content of love. In my ideal world, we’d all take joy in seeing people in love (assuming they are consenting adults, of course), and stop judging the love based on where it is directed. It’s our opinions and deeply held beliefs that lead us to believe love is wrong in some cases, but the truth is this: we all like love and we all want love. So, no matter your beliefs, see if you can rejoice in the love between two people (or between polyamorists – don’t want to leave them out). Because rejoicing in love will create more capacity for love in your heart.

Yay, Ireland, for your vote in favor of officially recognizing love!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly clear outside my window this morning with a deep marine layer to the west. Expect a sunny day with a slight chance of thunder/convection out in the desert. Temps will be, according to NOAA, in the upper 50’s all day. Given the location of the marine layer and the amount of sun right now, I suspect Hood River will make it into the mid 60’s today. Strong wind. No rainbows.

Tomorrow looks partly cloudy as an upper level low drops into eastern Washington, likely sending some high clouds and a deep marine layer this way. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows.

Tuesday looks partly cloudy to start with a better chance of thunder in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I got as far as loading my bike on my car yesterday before the wind picked up, and then I ended up windsurfing instead of mountain biking. The trails are all still there, and they are all still open, with the exception of Gunsight. Road biking will be pretty windy today, but this weather setup is conducive to lighter wind at higher elevations, so you could try riding in the upper valleys.

Windance.

Upcoming Events

In between all that yoga, there’s pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School field from 3 to 5, and there’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30. Speaking of the Armory, Skibowl’s Adventure park is free today and tomorrow for military members.

Looking ahead to next weekend, there’s a shuttle day fundraiser at the Cold Creek trail, also known as Thrillium. The Hood 2 River Relay happens on Saturday. Next Sunday, the Mt. Adams parks n’ rec district has a 1k, 5k, and 10k fundraiser run.
