Gorge Wind Forecast

Today is Sunday, and the wind today won’t provide much of a respite from the afternoon heat. That said, it might just be enough to get you on the water if you have a big enough kite, a foil board, or slalom gear. And the next few days, despite complications in the forecast, do look windy. So, for Sunday, you can expect light and variable wind through early afternoon. The wind will pick up first at Stevenson, hitting 10-13 by noon or so. By 2pm, we should have 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River.

Monday looks windier, but still very hot as a thermal trough sits right atop the central Gorge. In addition to the heat, the atmosphere will destabilize in the afternoon, impacting the wind quality and setting up a chance of thunderstorms. We’ll see W 15-18 to start the day from Stevenson to Hood River. By afternoon, we’ll have gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to Hood River. If thunderstorms fire off, all bets are off on wind speed and location.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

Tuesday looks complicated, and to further complicate the picture, various models are disagreeing on what form an incoming system will take. Let’s start with the high temps on Tuesday: 72 degrees in Portland and 94 degrees in Arlington. Along with that, weak high pressure over the Pacific teams up with the heat low sitting over eastern OR/WA. The problem with this whole scenario is that the atmosphere may destabilize in the afternoon, setting off thunderstorms. As of right now, the GFS predicts dawn patrol at 22-25 from Hood River to Mosier. By midday, the GFS says average wind speeds will be 30-40 with much higher gusts, with beaches from Swell to Arlington seeing nuking wind. My current suggestion is that it’ll be better to get on the water earlier rather than later. If this materializes, it’ll be one of those days where you’re kicking yourself for not owning a tiny sail. For goodness sake, you have access to the Gorge. Go buy a tiny sail. It’ll last you for the rest of your lifetime!

Moving on to Wednesday, our picture will be dominated by some sort of incoming low pressure system. It currently looks like we’ll see dawn patrol at gusty 24-27, concentrated east of Hood River. It looks like the wind will actually back off in the afternoon, with 22-25 from Mosier to Arlington. You may not need the Wednesday forecast if you get out on Tuesday, because you’re going to be so sore that you’ll want a day off!

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the things I most appreciate about the current US administration is how it’s stimulated so many conversations about racism and social justice. While I’ve had many productive conversations with people from all sides of the political spectrum, I’ve noticed a troubling pattern when I speak to Whites about racial issues.

People often have a knee-jerk reaction to any suggestion that they might be participating in oppression or racism. Let’s define racism: it’s not just bigotry (discrimination, hate speech, opinions, internalized models of good/bad). It’s also structural factors which serve to keep minorities oppressed (redlining, access to schools, generational poverty, etc.). By being White, we benefit from these systems.

But that’s not my point. What is it like to hear these things? Do you get anxious? Angry? Curious? Do you want to learn more about these topics? Are you offended by this discussion? Do you get defensive? That’s the point! It’s important to understand your reactions. A knee-jerk reaction to shut down a difficult conversation is a sign that there’s more to learn about the topic. Be brave and courageous and learn more. That’s what life is about – learning and growing and making connections. Have an awesome day!

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

First, the Rowena Curves have reopened. If you are riding out there, please use lights on your bikes because the traffic has been quite hectic. Next, a reminder that many of the 44 Road trails are open: Surveyor’s, Dog, Oak Ridge, Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie, Superconnector. If it’s not listed, it’s not open. =) No dogs on Hospital Hill. No riding Innerwoods or trails leading to the Bench, as those trails are currently closed due to logging. Post is riding great, especially GP.

Upcoming Events
