Sunday. Here’s that light wind day you’ve been waiting for!

DSC_7985-Edit
The wind on the river on this Sunday morning is officially light and variable, and models say it’s going to stay that way all day long. The 7am gradients were at .03 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc), and there’s a forecast of an afternoon temp differential of 5 degrees between Portland and Hood River. In addition, a trough of low pressure will approach the coast late in the day. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

This isn’t going to do much for the wind during the daylight hours today. Expect light and variable wind until early evening, when the westerlies will pick up to 10-13, rising to after sunset. If the wind does pick up before the sun goes down, you’ll find it first at Stevenson and Cascade Locks. It’s going to be a nice day to cool off on a SUP. If you don’t already have one, Big Winds has decided to continue their parking lot SUP sale today.

Monday sees that week trough of low pressure at the coast, giving us more marine clouds than on Sunday morning. This should start the Gorge off with 17-20 from Viento to Mosier. By midday, the wind will climb to 20-23, and there will be a period of 23-26 in the afternoon. In the afternoon, the wind will fill in from Stevenson to Rufus, with the strongest wind concentrated from Swell to Doug’s.

Tuesday sees strong high pressure offshore and a surface low in the desert. This is our Classic Gorge Setup. The forecast for Tuesday is currently Dawn Patrol at 26-30 from Swell to Doug’s with 28-32+ from Viento to Rufus by late morning, continuing through the evening. Stevenson’s Tuesday wind depends on the depth of the marine clouds, but it’s probably a fair guess that Stevenson will end up with at least 20-23, probably more.

Wednesday currently looks like 20-23 all day long.
