Tuesday’s sounding model suggests clear sky, but the presence of a frontal system to the north suggests high overcast sky. Either way, Tuesday’s currently looking dry on Mt. Hood. The free air freezing level will be 8000′ early, 6500′ midday, and 8000′ in the afternoon. Wind on Tuesday will be WSW 20-25 early, turning to W 30 midday and SW 15 in the afternoon.

Wednesday currently looks cloudy with sprinkles during the day with a shot of rain overnight. As of this morning, it’s looking like we’ll see snow Thursday and Friday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s not much wind out there this morning, but there is a touch of gradient: W .01 in the western Gorge and W .06 out east. You can expect gusty westerlies at 13-16 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles today, with 20-23 in the eastern Gorge. A weather system moves through overnight, leaving us with gusty W 23-26 from Viento to Arlington tomorrow morning. The wind will fade to W 5-10 by tomorrow afternoon. Tuesday looks like W 5-10, a perfect day for road biking!

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the things humans find most upsetting is lack of control. Helplessness. This feeling is distressing in our daily lives. On a larger scale, it’s linked with the development of PTSD after traumatic events. If someone felt helpless when something bad happened, they are more likely to have long-lasting repercussions.

We humans often feel powerless in the face of our emotions and reactions to situations. We find ourselves being controlled by our minds and our behaviors, rather than controlling them. This can leave us feeling helpless, frustrated and ashamed. When this happens, we try our same old solutions to create change, and they don’t work.

It is entirely possible to step out of this cycle and gain more control over your emotional life. You simply have to take up meditation. Mindfulness creates space for your emotions to happen without progressing to behaviors. Mindfulness gives you more control over who you are. It will end your enslavement to your emotions. When that happens, your inner world, even in turmoil, becomes a fascinating and amusing and somewhat bewildering companion, rather than an enemy.

Some studies say taking up meditation increases depression and anxiety. Well, duh. When you see what’s going on inside, of course it may get worse before it gets better. That’s often true of psychotherapy, exercise programs (ever been sore when you took up a new sport?), learning (had a headache from studying before?), and many other activities. It ain’t easy, but meditation will turn you from a helpless creature at the whim of your emotions to a powerful, compassionate leader of your inner universe. Give it a shot. The Headspace app is a great way to learn. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

Post is definitely too muddy to ride, and even Syncline is probably too muddy after we received .3” of rain yesterday. The most awesome thing you could do today would be to go hiking in the rain, looking at waterfalls. Or you could ride your beater gravel bike in the rain on the roads. It’s going to be warm enough – 55 degrees. Look for epic road biking Monday and Tuesday with high temps in the low 60’s!

Upcoming Events

There are three community yoga classes today: 9am at Yoga Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s also an 11am community meditation at Flow Yoga in Hood River.

Have an awesome day today!
