Sunday. Get out and play!

DSC_6338-Edit
We had more gradient to start today than we did yesterday and exactly the same amount of wind. Interesting, isn’t it? Anyway, our overall weather picture today starts off with a shortwave through of low pressure over the PNW. That thingie will move east later on today, and high pressure will build off the coast, setting us up with a decent scenario for Gorge westerlies. Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

The 6am gradients were .06 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc) with a river temp of 58 degrees, flow at The Dalles Dam of 184kcfs, and 1435 Chinook that made it past Bonneville yesterday. The fish count, of course, has nothing to do with your chances of getting on the river today. You can expect westerlies at 14-17 from Viento to Swell for the Dawnish Patrol session with 10-13 everywhere else. By late morning, we should be seeing 22-25 from Mosier to Rufus with 14-17 under the clouds near Hood River and 14-17 east of Rufus. Models say we’ll see the westerlies climb to 24-28 this afternoon from Swell to Arlington. I’m hesitant to predict quality wind near Hood River, given extensive cloud cover this morning. You’re probably going to be best off driving a little bit east if you want steady wind today.

I recommend you do get the wind today if you’re a Wind Johnnie, because we’re going to take at least a couple of days off as high pressure builds back in late tonight. Monday may start off with light westerlies at 7-11 or maybe 10-13. Models say the river will go glassy by mid-morning. This is one of those scenarios where reality may beat the models, in which case we could see 7-11 through the afternoon, but I wouldn’t put money on it.

Tuesday looks glassy near Hood River in the morning with easterlies near Hood River at 5-7 in the afternoon. In the western Gorge, we’ll have easterlies at 10-15 early. Stevenson will peak midday at E 15-20 and Rooster will peak midday at E 20-25. Given this forecast, I am potentially looking for a ride home from the downtown Portland area (or within a few miles of there) for me and my bike on Tuesday evening around 6:45.

Finally, I’ll just keep reminding you of this one: CGWA has a bunch of contests happening this summer – photo, Strava, and video. Get more information about those contests right here.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

No, I don’t feel like forecasting snow today.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was talking the other day about how we can sometimes confuse our tiredness with grumpiness or sadness or other unpleasant emotions. We can confuse our physical state too. Sometimes we’ll get sore after a big day on the snow or water or dirt. Our muscles will be tense. On another day, we may be anxious and stressed, and our muscles will be tense from that.

Depending on how in tune we are with our body, and depending on how we’ve learned to interpret muscle tension, our minds may link up inappropriate emotions with the bodily sensations we are feeling. For example, if we, as children, were tense and afraid a lot, we may find ourselves afraid when our muscles are sore from a big day of playing. This can result in a bit of a feedback loop, a fascinating one, but an unpleasant one.

Notice if this sort of thing happens to you – what emotions does your mind associate with your muscle tension?

An easy way to break this cycle is to dissipate that muscular tension by doing whatever you do to burn off energy – go for a ride, do some yoga, run, jump up and down… just make sure you’re using as many muscles as possible. You can even sit in one spot and shake (Google “Trauma Release Exercises”) And as you move those muscles of yours, pay attention to what emotions come up. You’re just releasing stuff, not really experiencing those emotions, remember. It can be pretty fascinating to see what’s stored there in ye olde body.

Speaking of muscle tension… I’d better wrap this up so I can get to my yoga class and then spend some time on the water. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy out there this Sunday morning, which I think is the best kind of weather, because it includes everything: clouds, sun, rainbow potential… Anyway, expect temps in the upper 50’s this morning and the low 70’s this afternoon with light wind early and moderate to strong wind this afternoon. 2% chance of rainbows. Monday looks mostly sunny. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks sunnier than Monday, if that’s possible. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. If that’s not warm enough for you, don’t worry – we’re looking at 90 for Wednesday. Fortunately, it’ll be June come Wednesday, so 90 will be totally seasonally appropriate.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went for a lap in Post yesterday, and it’s a mixed bag of tacky dirt, fast hardpack, ball bearings, and if you ride Moonscape (Mobius), you’ll find deep mid-summer dust. Just a reminder that there are a bazillion other trails open. You can find the information on my website’s mountain biking page. As for road biking, you’ll want to be done early today because the wind is going to pick up, but the next two days look fantastic. Speaking of… is anyone coming home from the downtown Portland area around 6:30pm on Tuesday? My bike and I might need a ride home. =)

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include the NW Cup Downhill race at Skibowl, the Sisters Stampede, and the Century Ride of the Centuries in Pendleton. The weekly Sunday events include community yoga at 9am at Samadhi in White Salmon, community meditation at 11 at Flow, Pickleball at 1 at May Street Elementary, pickup touch rugby at 3 at the Mosier School, YogaFaith at 4 at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and community yoga at 6 at Pure Yoga Hood River. And don’t forget that Skibowl’s Adventure park is free for active duty military folks all weekend.

There’s bonus meditation tonight at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30 with a visiting Buddist monk, Ajahn Amaro. If you enjoy meditation and philosophy talk, you will find this enjoyable.

Looking ahead to next weekend, it’s the Hood to River Relay – sign up to compete, or sign up as a volunteer. There’s also a trail work party happening in Post Canyon next Saturday.

Have an awesome day today!
