Sunday. Cold, Nothing, and a wild week ahead for the mountain.

DSC_0176
Today is going to be another clear and sunny day on the mountain, and if you live in the Gorge like I do, it’s going to be warmer up there than it is down here. Or at least the same temp. And it’ll be sunny on the mountain – no Nothing cloud on Mt. Hood. That special treat is reserved for the Gorge! Anyway, expect a sunny day on Mt. Hood with the free air freezing level at 8000′. 5000′ temps will max out in the upper 30’s. East wind at 15-20 early swings around to SE 10 in the afternoon. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts out sunny and ends up cloudy by 1pm. The free air freezing level will be 6500′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and at 3000′ (or maybe all the way down to the surface, depending on how much the air cools as it moistens) in the evening. We’ll see just a few flurries overnight, for no accumulation. Wind will be SSE 15-20 in the morning and SW 20 in the afternoon and evening.

Tuesday will be sunny on the mountain, unless the low clouds creep up in elevation, in which case it may be foggy down low and sunny up high. The free air freezing level will be 3000′ early, rising to a 6000′ snow level in the afternoon and falling to 5500′ overnight. Precip starts between 4pm and 7pm, with .9” water value (WV) between 4pm and midnight, after which the precip rate will taper off. So… the most likely scenario here is rain for the base of T-Line and Meadows, and rain for Skibowl. The wind on Tuesday will be SW 15 early, rising to SW 35 in the afternoon and swinging around to W 30 after the front passes around midnight. Meh.

Wednesday starts off partly cloudy, clears midday, and clouds up again in the afternoon with precip starting around 1pm. The snow level will be 5500′ early, rising to 8000′ mid-morning and dropping to 5500′-6000′ when the precip hits, and rising back up to 8500′ by the evening. It’s really unclear how much precip we’ll get with this system at this point. It’s definitely a wait and see.

The PNW will be in a very active weather pattern this week, with a couple more systems forecast before next weekend. The snow level will be fluctuating quite a bit with these systems, and it’s going to take some major finger crossing to get snow, rather than rain, out of this week. So, cross your fingers and hope for the best!

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s positively nuking this morning at Rooster Rock with the iWind/iKite sensor reading a cool, clean 50mph. With the air temp at 32 degrees, that a wind chill of 14. Great day to be on the water, right? Not. Expect 40-50 all day at Rooster with 30-40 at Steven’s Locks. Tomorrow starts off with 40 at Rooster and drops off to 30 in the afternoon. Expect 30-35 on Tuesday and 30 on Wednesday. Is it windy yet?

For those of you wanting to watch the wind speeds at Stevenson, you can check the town’s weather station.

Random Morning Thoughts

There’s a chicken and egg debate about love that I’ve talked about before. I want to touch on that again today. As children, we need to be loved in order to be able to love ourselves. That’s straight up developmental theory for you. Popular culture changes this conversation for adults: we say we need to love ourselves before we can find love from others. I think it’s entirely possible that the opposite is true: we need to experience love from others before we can experience self-love. More than likely, both are true and play off each other. The more love we experience, the more we can love both ourselves and others, and the more love we’ll bring in.

That’s been my experience, and I’m sticking with that story!

When we interact another person, our feelings toward them can be positive, negative, or neutral. We can love, hate, or feel ambivalent. Of course, we can mix those feelings, but those are the general categories.

Given that people need to feel love to create love, it’s important to tip the scale of what we’re sending into the world in a positive direction. See if you shift your feelings by one category. In other words, rather than feeling neutral toward strangers, attempt to feel positive toward them. Rather than feeling angry or hateful towards people with whom you’ve had difficulty, try and feel more ambivalent.

The more positive feelings we create in the world and the less negativity we send toward others, the better the world will be. This one, I think, isn’t up for debate: more love and kindness is better than more anger, hatred and negativity. Just think about how much better you feel when you’re experiencing love than when you’re experiencing hatred! See if you can shift how you feel toward others just a little bit further on the positivity scale. It’ll change you, and it’ll change those around you. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I just went outside to check the weather, and it felt much colder than it has the last few days, despite being warmer on the thermometer. I think that’s the Nothing: damp cold is colder than dry cold. Anyway, the Nothing is here, possibly to stay, possibly to break up a little bit this afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the upper 30’s this afternoon. Chilly east wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow starts off with the Nothing and ends up cloudy with temps in the low 20’s early and the mid 30’s in the afternoon. There’s a slight chance of light freezing rain in the western Gorge tomorrow afternoon and evening. East wind. No rainbows.

Tuesday looks cloudy early with precip starting sometime between 4pm and 7pm. Temps will be into the low 30’s early and the upper 30’s in the afternoon. Models say we’ll warm up enough during the day to avoid any messiness. However, with strong east wind all day long, it’s entirely possible we’ll see freezing rain for some areas Tuesday night. Stay tuned as we get closer.

Road and Mountain Biking

Since people aren’t listening to the “Don’t ride freeze-thaw mud” message, I’m recruiting all of you. Please tell your friends to ask themselves, “Was it below freezing last night? Is it above freezing today?” before they attempt to ride. If the answers to both those questions are “yes”, severe trail damage will occur as your wheels pass through the mud. This is going to have to be a group effort to educate people. A nice alternative to destroying trails is to take your mountain bike out on gravel roads. You’ll see some lovely new scenery, get a great workout, and you won’t disrespect all the hard-working trailbuilders.
