Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

Sounds like the folks who drove preemptively to Arlington yesterday had a nice session on the water. You won’t have to do anything risky like that today. Expect light west wind in the 5-10 range this morning all through the Gorge. As this weather system moves through around 11am, the wind will pick up to gusty 10-13, or maybe a touch more, from Stevenson to Rowena. East of Rowena, the wind will pick up to gusty 24-27 out to Arlington, or possibly even further east.

Tomorrow starts off with light west wind at less than 10mph everywhere. Expect gusty 12-15 late in the day from Stevenson to Arlington as a weak front pushes in. Tuesday starts with W 5-10 and picks up to 15-18 in the afternoon, likely strongest from Mosier to Rufus.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

It looks like this weather pattern, and the accompanying unreliable wind, will continue at least through Thursday.

The coast will be seeing even more rain than the Gorge along with a lack of northerly wind. Today: S 10-15, W swell 7′ @ 17 seconds. Tomorrow: S 5-10/light/N 10-15, W 7′ @ 11. Tuesday: S 20-25 midday, NW 9′ @ 11.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 10-13. Jones tomorrow, 10-13. Jones Tuesday, 10-13. Sauvie’s today, wet and calm. Sauvie’s tomorrow, less wet and equally calm. Sauvie’s Tuesday, about like Monday.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Not much to say here today, but don’t be surprised to see a bunch of new snow above 8000’ on the volcanoes the next time they peek out of the clouds!

Random Morning Thoughts

DSC_0292
I awoke this morning to the sound of rain and puddly noises on the freeway. Like a good little girl, I sat down to write the forecast. That lasted until the downpour started, and then, being a good little girl, I had to go outside and run around in the rain, jump in the puddles, and stand in the river running through my parking lot.

Adult Temira wondered about the hazards of standing in an oily stream filled with the runoff of a summer’s oil drips, antifreeze droplets, and transmission fluid leaks. Child Temira didn’t give a rat’s ass. She was thrilled about puddles and rivers and downpours and also about being naughty and saying the word “ass”.

Child Temira stood in the river, jumped in the puddles, and wandered around until her hair was wet and her clothes were soaked.

What’s the point of such silliness? Our child selves (Maslow would call them self-actualized) take delight and wonder in the simplest things. Puddles are fun, downpours are awe-inspiring, and parking lot streams are a source of endless fascination and amazing sensations on bare feet (don’t get me started on the joys of mud).

So, if you’re up early enough, let your child self take over for a bit and give you a full experience of the simple pleasures provided by the first big rain we’ve had in a long time. As an added bonus, the awe, delight and joy you pull up from the hidden reaches of your soul will likely carry you through the rest of the day. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

I woke up this morning to a wintry vista outside my window: rain, dark sky, and limited visibility. It’s lovely! Expect the rain to continue through 11am or so, tapering off in the afternoon, but likely remaining showery. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the low 70’s this afternoon. Light wind, 87% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow looks partly cloudy with temps in the mid 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. There’s a chance of showers tomorrow night. Light wind. 4% chance of rainbows. Expect a partly cloudy day on Tuesday with a slight chance of showers. Very slight. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late. 1% chance of rainbows. There’s a better chance of rainbows (and rain) on Wednesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

I wrote this section, and then it started pouring. So I rewrote it. As of the time of writing, we’d had .21” of rain over the last two days. That’s going to be enough to make an impact on the dust situation in Post Canyon. I’m even considering a tack alert for upper Post tomorrow morning. In the mountains, there’s almost certainly been more rain, and also to the west. That means trails like Lewis River, Plains of Abraham, Falls Creek, and 44 Road rides should be in pretty good shape come this afternoon and for the next couple of days.

In other news, someone reminded me yesterday that there’s new pavement on the south side of Old Man Pass. This is great news if you’re self-shuttling (aka pedaling) Falls Creek. It also seems like it could be a fun place to do intervals on a road bike.

Speaking of road biking, remember that all the summer oils will be on the roads still, and combined with water on the roads, it’s going to be slick. Be careful out there!
