Saturday. Yup, it’s windy.

2016-02-20 16-08-11 (C)
It’s a beautiful sunny morning in Hood River, and despite standing all the way up in my desk, I couldn’t see marine clouds. I know they are out there somewhere, because our 7am gradient was nothing short of ridiculous: .19 (pds-dls) and .08 (dls-psc). River temp is 70 degrees, and flow is 133kcfs at The Dalles Dam. Back to those gradients… they are a sign of an impending wickedly windy day! Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Expect 23-26 right off the bat from Viento to Swell with a quick build to 25-29 from Viento to Mosier. It seems reasonable to say, with .19 gradient, that we’ll see 30+ from Viento to Mosier by late morning. By this afternoon, we should have 28-32+ all the way from Viento to Arlington. Stevenson will start the day with 14-18 and pick up to 25-29. Have fun, Bridge of the Gods Kitefest competitors.

Tomorrow morning (Sunday) starts with a deeper marine layer. Depending on how that plays out, we may see the unicorns and rainbows shift to the east of Hood River. Or maybe not. Anyway, you can expect 25-29 Sunday morning from Mosier to Doug’s (Viento to Mosier if the clouds are lesser). There may be a short period of 28-32 mid to late morning from Swell to Doug’s before the wind backs off to 25-29 for the remainder of the day. Stevenson on Sunday will likely see 13-16 early and 24-28 in the afternoon. Remember that Sunday is the Blowout – if you are riverplaying between Stevenson and Hood River, keep your eyes peeled for racers.

Monday starts with 17-21 near Hood River and builds to 23-26 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Rufus. Tuesday looks like it’ll max out at 24-28, but the exact location of that wind is, as of yet, unknown.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was a bit riled up last night after working on a school project, and couldn’t seem to fall asleep. I stayed lying there in bed, hoping something would change, too tired to do anything else. In other words, I kept doing the same thing that wasn’t working: curling up in bed hoping to sleep.

We all do things like this: we keep trying the same thing over and over in hopes that it will work the next time. That could be a new kiting or windsurfing trick. It could be romantic relationships. It could be a conversation with mom. Or it could be dealing with insomnia.

The most effective way to deal with an unchanging situation is to change something, because the thing/person/etc. that you’re interacting with is unlikely to change on its own. And if both halves of the equation remain the same, the answer will never change.

So, the next time you’re stuck in a repeating pattern, change something. Anything. Big or small. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll stumble over a way to change the outcome. Have an awesome day. See you on the water!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
