Saturday. Sunshine and more record warmth.

DSC_5938
It’s a beautiful start to the day here in Hood River, and today’s your last chance to catch the west wind for a few days. Our 6am gardients were .11 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc), and hadn’t moved since 5am. As high pressure builds inland today, those gradients will drop and the wind will turn more northerly, or even easterly in the eastern Gorge. So, you’ll want to get on the river earlier rather than later. That said, if you have larger gear or a foil board, you’ll be find all day long. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Expect morning westerlies to be in the 18-22 range from Viento to Swell, with the White Salmon Sandbar area likely joining in too. Beaches further east will be in the 13-16 range for the Dawn Patrol session. As of right now, models are suggesting the wind will back off to 13-16 near Hood River by mid-morning, with sites east of Doug’s turning light, calm, and then light easterly. By this evening, the wind will back off to 10-13, only blowing from Stevenson to Mosier. In other words, you’ll want to stay close to Hood River today unless you’re explicitly looking for a light wind experience. That said, models do tend to overestimate the speed with which the dieoff happens in these situations… River water temp is 53 degrees.

Sunday starts off with calm wind or very light east wind. The wind will pick up to widespread E 10-15 – we’re talking all the way from Rooster to Arlington – in the afternoon. Monday looks like E 15-20, concentrated at Stevenson and Rooster. As of right now, it’s looking like a weak weather system will impact the PNW on Tuesday, giving us gusty westerlies in the low to mid 20’s.

Random Morning Thoughts

This whole “becoming a therapist” thing is an intense project. It’s more about “becoming a more whole human” than anything else. One of the things that’s been suggested to us therapists-in-training is to ask others about the impact we have on them. Think about this… the idea is you go up to the people around you and ask for honest feedback about your behavior, especially your flaws. Intense, right?

It’s an incredible way to kickstart growth in your world, if growth is a thing you’re into. If you want to try it, be gentle with yourself. Maybe ask one person you really, really trust. Take what they say with an open heart – you trust this person, and they are taking a risk too by being that honest with you. Now take their feedback, and see if you can change that thing about yourself. It’s not a bad thing, remember. It’s just a thing that keeps you from connecting with others as authentically as possible.

Why is this a powerful thing to do? Because as well as we know ourselves, we still have blind spots. And those blind spots can only be seen by the people around us. Blind spots are not visible in the mirror of our self-awareness. They’re not visible in our journals. They can’t be seen by us until they’re pointed out to us. So, if you’re feeling really brave one day, give it a shot. Or don’t. It’s your world, and you get to inhabit it however you like. Make it an awesome world, and have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Our friends at NOAA have something to share with you today: USING PDX AS AN EXAMPLE AGAIN…THE MEAN TEMPERATURE FOR APRIL 2016 THROUGH THE 28TH IS 57.9 DEG F…5.9 DEG F ABOVE NORMAL AND A STUNNING 1.6 DEG F ABOVE THE PREVIOUS RECORD OF 56.3 DEG F FROM APRIL 2004. RECORDS ARE NOT JUST BEING BROKEN…THEY ARE BEING SHATTERED DUE TO THE SERIES OF SUMMER-CALIBER UPPER RIDGES THAT HAVE AFFECTED THE PAC NW THIS MONTH.

They are shouting, because this is a terrifying piece of climate news to add to all the other dire news coming in from across the globe over the last two years. And yet, we do very little to change the way we interact with our planet…

In more relevant-to-today news, you can expect sunshine. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 60’s this afternoon. Light to moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Sunday starts off with temps in the low 40’s and heats up into the upper 70’s. Light wind. No rainbows. Monday looks warm and sunny with the temp around 50 degrees early and 80 in the afternoon. Light east wind. No rainbows. No rainbows until Wednesday, most likely.

Road and Mountain Biking

The dirt, while a bit dry, is still worthy of your tires. And the roads this afternoon, well, they’ll be lovely as the wind drops. Sunday’s wind will be non-existent in the morning and easterly in the afternoon (enough to impact your ride), so take that into account. Monday brings E wind at 15-20.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include an 8am trail run in Post Canyon, and a 10am shuttle ride in Post Canyon. If you want to do the shuttle, you have to be a woman, and you have to bring $10. Meet at Dirty Fingers for that one. There’s a youth fishing clinic at Mayer Park today, a garden party at Pacific Hermitage, and the Fly Fishing Film Tour in The Dalles tonight.

Sunday is the Ram’s Head Randonee uphill-downhill race at Meadows and the Bear Springs Trap mountain bike race. There’s also a HRATS trail work party in Post Canyon at 9am. There’s a free yoga class at 9am at Samadhi, Ping Pong at the Hood River armory at 10, community meditation at Flow at 11am, pickleball at May Street Elementary at 1pm, pickup touch rugby at 3pm at the Mosier School, and YogaFaith (free or by donation) at Pure Yoga The Dalles at 4pm.

Have an awesome day today!
