Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Saturday morning, and a very wet Saturday morning at that. We’ll see east wind this morning at 20-25 at Rooster and 10-15 near Stevenson (where it will be POURING). The wind will go calm after 1pm or so. Sunday sees calm wind or very light west wind to start the day. Pouring rain will continue through noon, when this system will move eastward. When that happens, we’ll have gusty 21-25 east of The Dalles with light west wind between Cascade Locks and Rowena. Monday starts out calm. Easterlies pick up to 10-15 midday and stay there. Tuesday currently looks like E 25-30 at Rooster Rock and 20-25+ near Stevenson.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the most beautiful things about being a therapist is getting to see the universalities of human concerns. No matter what brings someone in, no matter how “sick” they are, they have the same concerns: being liked by others, viewing themselves as not-good, wanting companionship, feeling disconnected, feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of life, feeling frustrated with various systems of assistance and oppression.

Seeing these commonalities leaves me, as a human, feeling more connected to everyone around me. It is a privilege, for sure. I find myself wishing that more people shared their deepest worries with others. If we did, we would all begin to understand that we are like everyone else, that we are not actually as different or as “broken” as we believe we are. We would begin to understand that there is not “normal” or “abnormal”.

Our concerns are universal; how they play out in our behavior, thoughts, and feelings, how intensely we experience our concerns, is really what separates us. In understanding this, we can have more compassion for ourselves and for others. When we understand that people are merely reacting to internal suffering, we can love them as they are. And that, in itself, is healing. You are awesome, even if you are suffering. Have an awesome (and wet) day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but could be if you come to Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Saturday morning, and the snow is still falling on Mt. Hood. Warm air is moving this way, and the snow will switch to rain before 11am. The snow level, at 4000′ Saturday morning, will rise to 10,000′ by 11am and stay there. From then on through Sunday, we’ll see impressive rain totals on Mt. Hood, as strong orographic (terrain-enhanced) effects come into play. Between Saturday morning and midnight, the GFS model suggests we will see approximately 5” of rain on Mt. Hood. Wind will rise to WSW 60+ as the day goes on.

Sunday looks very rainy in the morning and clear in the afternoon. The snow level will be 10,000′ early and 8000′ after 8am, holding there for the rest fo the day. The mountain will receive about 4” of rain between midnight and noon, after which the rain will turn to showers. Wind will be W 70 (whoa) early, WSW 40 in the morning, and W 45-50 in the afternoon. Monday looks clear. The free air freezing level will be around 12,000′ with W wind at 20 early and NW 10 in the afternoon.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s very much too wet to ride your bike without damaging the trails. Consider going for a trail run instead. You could also ride your trainer. There are two work parties on Saturday: 9am at Pine Mont, and 9:30 at Golden Eagle Park (near HRVHS).

Upcoming Events

There are all sorts of events happening as part of Gorge Happiness Month, more than I care to type out.

There are two trail work parties this morning in this delightful weather: 9am at Pine Mont to work on the Pine Mont Loop (Kitchen Sink) and 9:30am at Golden Eagle Park (near the High School) for some family-friendly in-town trails. The Columbia Gorge Snow and Avalanche Workshop is today from 12:30 to 4:30 at Wy’east auditorium. Not sure how much it costs. There’s also a fundraising social from 7pm-10pm at Kickstand to raise money for the Crag Rats Search and Rescue group. The (wet) Columbia Gorge Marathon is Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
