Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!

Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Sunday starts out with snow and continues that way, with a chance of some breaks in the weather in the afternoon. The snow level will be 500′ or so on Sunday morning, rising to 1500′ by the afternoon and dropping back to 500′ after midnight. We’ll see .5” water value (WV) between 4am and 4pm, for 5-6” of fluffy powder. We’ll see another .2” WV or between 4pm Saturday and 4am Sunday, for a couple more inches of new snow. Wind on Sunday will be W 25 in the morning, WSW 15 midday, and W 20 in the evening.

Monday brings orographic snowfall mixed with sunbreaks all day long. The snow level will be 500′ in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and back down to the surface after midnight. Approximately .3” WV will fall during the day, for 3-4” of powder. Another .2” falls overnight, for another couple inches of new snow. Wind on Monday will be WNW 20 in the morning, W 30 in the afternoon, and WNW 30 after midnight.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the things I see over and over in my counseling office is people’s shame around accepting the help and caring of others. We live in an individualistic society. Our motto is “pick yourself up by your bootstraps”, but this motto fails to acknowledge that each of us exists in connection with others.

We are genetically designed to help and accept help. Layered atop that is a cultural story that accepting help is shameful, a sign of weakness. That story may be hard-wired in you, but it’s possible to choose to live by a different story.

Each time we accept help, we allow someone else to be in the helper role. We give our helper the opportunity to care, to be generous, and to be kind. Without people accepting help, there would be no people giving help. There is no shame in this equation, only kindness and generosity. So, next time you need help, next time you want help, reach out for it. You’ll be giving a gift to the person who responds. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Today is starting off cloudy at river level as somewhere above us the dewpoint and the temperature have equalized. The clouds should burn off, giving us a sunny day. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the low 40’s this afternoon. Light west wind. No rainbows. Sunday brings wet snow in the morning and rain after mid-morning. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. East wind early. West wind later. 79% chance of rainbows. Monday looks partly to mostly cloudy and showery. Temps will be in the low 30’s early (for a few flurries possible) and the upper 30’s in the afternoon. West wind. 99% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Your trainer bike will be happy to see you today. And so will your XC skis. I tried to go jogging in Post yesterday, but that didn’t work so well – there’s still a foot of snow there. I heard that Syncline is one big waterfall and stream, so please don’t mountain bike there or you’ll really do a lot of trail damage. There should be plenty of good road biking today. Go try that!

Upcoming Events

There’s a Spanish-language community yoga class at Flow at 7am on Saturdays. The Cold Lap cyclocross ride is at Dirty Fingers at 3pm on Saturday.

Have an awesome day today!
