Saturday. Snow shredding and winter sun. Get it while you can!

DSCF9601-Pano
We have open ski resorts again today. Meadows has Buttercup, Easy and Daisy along with some Nordic. Timberline is calling for Bruno, Pucci and Palmer (we’ll see with the wind) today. Skibowl has tubing. It’s looking like a clear and sunny day with above-freezing temps for the high-elevation hills. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Expect sunshine today with temps rising into the mid 30’s from 5000′ to 8000′ with the free air freezing level at 8000′ all day. The wind will be out of the E at 25mph this morning and 20mph this afternoon.

Tomorrow looks similar, with temps at low elevations below freezing and temps between 4000′ and 7000′ in the low to mid 30’s. The free air freezing level, in other words, will be 7000′ tomorrow. Wind will be out of the E at 15 in the morning and out of the SE at 15 in the afternoon.

We’ll see change start to happen on Monday. The morning starts out clear with a blob of above-freezing air between 3000′ and 5000′. By the afternoon, clouds move in and the freezing level drops to 4500′. It’s possible we’ll see just a few snow flurries with this system, but not enough to do more than look pretty falling through the sky. Wind on Monday will be SW 20 early and SW 30 in the afternoon.

The next weather system arrives late on Tuesday. At this point, it’s looking like the snow level with this one will be around 6500′. Another system arrives on Thursday morning-ish. This one also starts out quite warm, but may drop some snow at its tail end. We’re going to have to wait and see how things shake out. In other words, I’m going to suggest you get up to the hill and go ride this weekend, just in case!

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s blowing in the mid 30’s at Stevenson and Rooster this morning, and shall continue to blow 35-40 all day today. Tomorrow looks like 35-40 all day. Monday starts off with E 35-40 at Stevenson and Rooster (no, I’m not going windsurfing on my way to school – it’s too cold for me), and backs off to 15-20 in the afternoon.

For those of you wanting to watch the wind speeds at Stevenson, you can check the town’s weather station.

Random Morning Thoughts

I think a lot about violence these days. It’s a complicated subject, and each person has a different concept of what constitutes violence. I was talking to a friend about moral reasoning yesterday, and he pointed out that my imposing my values on others (the topic was related to income inequality) was violent. I agree with him. When we impose our values on others, we take their power away. On a similar vein, when we have power, and we insist that others create the change they want to see in the world without our help, we are being passively violent.

To make this more concrete, our country is experiencing institutionalized racism in the form of police violence and a privately run prison system that incarcerates more people per capita than any other country in the world. We have income inequality on par with a Banana Republic. We have people trapped in less-than-living-wage jobs, and we have students trapped under crushing debts at outrageous interest rates (graduate loans are 6%+ with a 1% origination fee, and interest accumulates while you are in school).

Instead of addressing this on a systemic level, we invoke the American Dream: people should pick themselves up by their bootstraps, they should get a job to pay for education, they should, they should, they should. Very few people move a muscle (meaning writing letters, protesting on the streets, or volunteering) to change these structures. Instead, we blame the people who are trapped. We impose our values on people who live in a different reality than our own. We assume that because we were able to succeed, others should be able to do the same.

By doing this, we impose our values. We hold people down rather than helping them up. We, in essence, are being violent, rather than loving. I do not have the solutions, but I encourage everyone to think openly when we see people of different means. We don’t know why they are where they are. Instead of thinking, “Get a job,” I encourage you to craft in your mind a terrible story that put the person you’re contemplating in the position they are in. Generate some empathy, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll lower the level of violence in the world. End of rant. Be nice to others. Cultivate empathy. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I just went outside and checked the weather. NOAA is predicting Nothing for the central Gorge today, but as of 5:59am, it was still clear as a bell outside my house. I’m going to predict clear sky today (that sounds nicer than Nothing, so I’m going with it). Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks EXACTLY like today. Ok, maybe a few degrees colder in the morning. Monday starts off clear with temps in the mid 20’s and ends up cloudy with a high near 40. East wind. There’s the tiniest, slightest, most microscopic chance of just a few freezing rain sprinkles on Monday night. A warmer, wetter system arrives late Tuesday night. At that point, it should be warm enough in the Gorge to avoid messiness.

Road and Mountain Biking

I received a very frustrated note from a local trail fairy yesterday in reaction to the crowds of people riding Syncline after the temps had warmed yesterday. I know that none of you would ride freeze-thaw conditions. So, I’d like to remind the other people of this: When you ride trails that were frozen last night and are now thawed, you can do major damage in a very short period of time. Once the sun hits the dirt, it should be allowed to sit for the rest of the day. I know you want to ride in the sun, but please don’t. Please choose a trail that’s under the canopy. Better yet, go ride a gravel road in the sun. You have a mountain bike. Use it to open up your options. Dry Creek is pretty awesome, as are lots of roads on the Washington side!

Upcoming Events

Today is Saturday, and I haven’t got a clue what’s happening today. I believe there’s an 8am trail run in Post Canyon. We have open ski resorts, and that’s thrown a bit of a monkey wrench into my world. Tomorrow, however, is my favorite yoga class: 9am at Yoga Samadhi, free or by donation. There’s another free class at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 4pm. The Mosier School fields host a pickup touch rugby game at 3pm, and the ping pong players gather at the Hood River Armory at 5:30pm.

Have an awesome day today!
