Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today, Saturday, looks like a snowy day on Mt. Hood. That’s great, because both Meadow and Timberline will be open! The snow level for Saturday will be 3000′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ after midnight. About .3-.4” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 3-5” of new snow. Another .6” WV falls after 4pm, for another 6-8” of dry powder. Widn will be SW 10-15 through the afternoon, becoming NW 25 in the evening. That NW wind will enhance the snowfall rate.

Sunday looks colder with snow in the morning and sunshine in the afternoon. The snow level will be around 1000′ all day. The GFS suggests just .1” WV during the day, but NW wind may enhance the snow accumulation. Let’s call it 1-3” before the snow stops in the afternoon. Wind will be NW 25 all day and NNW 20 overnight.

Monday might start off with just a few scattered flurries, but it will quickly turn sunny. The free air freezing level will be 500′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ after midnight. Wind will start at NNW 20 and fade to N 15 after midnight.

After Monday the weather will turn increasingly warm on the mountain. Expect temps to climb each day, eventually hitting 50 degrees at 5000′ on Thursday. There’s no precipitation in the forecast through next weekend.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m having a perfectly lovely morning sitting in front of my happy lights, and I’m not particularly committed to the idea of writing a reflection. Instead, I’m going to sit here in the faux sunshine, read the news, and sip my cup of coffee. It’s going to be a delightful rainy day here in the Gorge, and a lovely snowy day on the mountain. I hope you find time to get out and enjoy it. Have an awesome day!

One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Saturday, we’ll have E 7-12 for the first half of the day and calm wind after noon. Sunday starts with W 12-15 through the entire Gorge. By mid to late morning, the wind should pick up to W 20-23 between Viento and The Dalles. Stevenson will probably stay in the clouds and showers with W 7-11, and the eastern Gorge will see calm wind in the afternoon. Monday brings light west wind at 5mph or less. Tuesday starts with E 30 and builds to E 40. Wednesday currently looks like E 50-60, depending on the depth of the cold pool.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s going to be a rainy Saturday in the Gorge: light rain in the morning and moderate rain in the afternoon. Temps will be near 40 early and 44 later. Light wind. 14% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks colder with a trace to a couple inches of snow above 1000′ by Sunday morning. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 40’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Watch out for icy roads on Monday morning. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 40’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. .05% chance of rainbows. Starting Monday, the weather looks dry for the next week with sub-freezing temps each night.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s still too muddy to ride anything but Syncline, and Syncline is pretty muddy too. Starting Monday, we’ll be heading into a freeze-thaw cycle, which will leave the trails sensitive to damage. Repeat this mantra: “If it was below freezing last night and it is near or above freezing now, I will not ride exposed trails.” Your best bet when temps go below freezing is to ride trails under the canopy or ride the roads. Save the date for December 14th, the HRATS annual fundraiser at Double Mountain.

Upcoming Events

Today is World Fat Bike Day, and there’s a gathering at Cooper Spur at 9am. You can find more information on The Facebook. There’s a work party at Sandy Ridge today. The Meadows Avalanche Dog Fundraiser is December 7th at Double Mountain, and the HRATS annual fundraiser is the 14th, also at Double Mountain.
