Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

As of 6am today, the wind was again beating the models, with upper teens at Swell and low 20’s at the Rowena stretch. Gradients were sitting at .07 (pdx-dls) and E .04 (dls-psc). As a strong, compact surface low swings across the PNW today, just north of the Columbia, we’ll see some exciting, but short-lived, wind action.

Starting around 10am or11am, the wind will jump from gusty 15-18 to the upper 20’s or maybe 30+ at various locations. You’ll see this happen first at Stevenson, then at Swell, then at Doug’s… you get the picture. If you want a piece of the action, you’ll want to be rigged and ready, because the strong wind won’t last long – models suggest windspeeds will be in freefall by 2pm. In other words, grab a book, drive to your chosen location, and wait for the wind to arrive. Another option is to bring a larger kite/sail and rig up as the wind dies.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Tomorrow starts off with rain in the western Gorge and gusty 10-13 at most locations. We’ll see gusty 15-18 after 11am and for the rest of the day from the edge of the low clouds east to Arlington. That likely means you’ll be driving east of Hood River for wind.

Monday starts off with light west wind and picks up to 11-14 in the afternoon, probably from Mosier to Arlington, but possibly including the western Gorge too.

Out on the coast today, it’s stormy. Like winter, only warmer. Forecast: Today, S 30+ everywhere, combined wind and ground swell 8-15′ @ 11 seconds. Tomorrow, S 10-15, W 7 @ 12. Monday, LTV, W 8 @ 11.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 10-13. Jones tomorrow, 10-13. Jones Monday, 5-10. Sauvie’s today, S 10-15+. Sauvie’s tomorrow, nope. Sauvie’s Monday, nope.

Random Morning Thoughts

BigRainbow
I have so many things on my mind this morning that I can’t pick one to talk about. Plus, they’re mostly serious, and I’ve been serious for three days. That’s enough! So let’s talk about the rain this morning. Well, calling it rain would be overly generous. Let’s talk about the sprinkles.

It’s about freakin’ time it rained!

It’s about time the air felt cool. It’s about time the sound of raindrops on rooftops replaced the sound of the wind in the trees. It’s about time for the dust to settle and the wilted leaves to perk up. It’s about time for the scent of wet pavement to fill the air, for sprinkler systems to become redundant to nature, and for raindrops to replace sweat droplets on bikers, hikers and joggers.

Hooray for rain! May we receive more awesome rain over the next week! And then… may we receive chanterelles…

Gorge Weather Forecast

I awakened this morning to the smell of wet pavement, but not to the sound of puddles on the freeway, so I knew it was just sprinkling. The sprinkles will taper off during the day and pick up again after midnight. Temps will be in the upper 60’s early and the mid 70’s this afternoon. Light wind early, strong wind midday, and moderate wind late. 87% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow starts off with temps near 60 and rain. The rain will taper off during the day, leaving us with mostly cloudy sky and occasional sprinkles with a high temp in the low 70’s. Light to moderate wind. 93% chance of rainbows.

Monday looks partly cloudy with temps in the upper 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Next chance of rainbows is Tuesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

As of 6am, we had received exactly 1/100th of an inch of rain, according to Hood River Weather, Larry’s website. It’s my hope that we’ll receive more, but the radar doesn’t give much hope. Perhaps tonight with the next front?

So, there’s not enough rain yet to impact the trails, but there’s enough rain to make the roads slick. With all the summer oil n’ stuff on the roads, they’re going to be slippery, so be very, very careful if you’re road biking.
