Saturday. Ready to sing in the rain?

BigRainbow
It’s been snowing lightly, on and off, this morning. We’ll see continued light flurries, and maybe a few breaks in the weather for the first half of the day. Another system moves in sometime between 1pm and 4pm, bringing heavy snow followed by heavy rain. The snow level today will be 3500′ early, 5000′ by 7pm, 6500′ tonight, and 9000′ by Sunday morning. We’ll see flurries this morning, for no real accumulation. Then we’ll see 1.5-1.7” water value (WV) after 1pm. The first .2-.5” will fall as snow, for 2-4” of wet snow. After that, we’ll see an inch or so of rain. Wind today will be W 30 early, dropping to SW 15-20 midday, picking up to SW 25 in the afternoon, and turning to W 45 in the evening. That could be enough to slow down lifts, but probably won’t stop them. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Sunday looks rainy all day long, with the heaviest and most laugh-worthy rain in the morning and mid-afternoon. The snow level tomorrow will be 9000′-10,000′ all day. We’ll see 1.5” of rain between 4am and 4pm, followed by another .5” of rain after 4pm, ending late in the evening. Wind Sunday will be W 50 early, turning to WNW 50-55 in the afternoon and evening. That’s right on the edge of what could shut down lifts, so be prepared for slow lift rides in the rain.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Expect light west wind this morning (Saturday) to maybe pick up to 10-13 from Stevenson to Arlington mid-morning before backing off to light and variable conditions this afternoon. It’s looking like we may see a burst of gusty 20-23 tomorrow morning in the western Gorge before the wind backs off to 10-13 from Stevenson to The Dalles and picks up to 23-26 in the eastern Gorge in the afternoon. Monday starts with W 25-29, probably east of Hood River, and holds through early afternoon in the eastern Gorge. The western Gorge will probably see 13-16 on Monday.

Random Morning Thoughts

Our memories are fascinating. Study after study has shown that memories are unreliable and can be altered. Here’s the basic idea: each time you access a memory, you impact it. You know, like the observer effect in quantum physics – the mere act of interacting with something changes it.

You can take advantage of this to modify your memories. Is it ethical? Up to you to decide. That’s the great thing about ethics – they are personal choices. Anyway, I had a therapist do this, and it worked great, and Louis Cozolino tells the story of a therapist changing a client’s memories for the better. Neither you nor I are therapists (at least not in the context of the forecast), so we can change our memories if we choose to.

I’m sure you have a nasty memory or two lurking in your head. If you want to play with this, think of a really, really good moment too. Or do this in the presence of someone you love. Really concentrate on the good memory or good person. Bring up the bad memory. Hold them both in your mind, and attempt to infuse goodness into the badness. Do this for 30 seconds or so, and go on with your day. Make sure you have lots of good memories to choose from, because the process, in my experience, will leach a little goodness out of your happy memories. Somehow, though, the balance seems to work in favor of making things better, maybe because we’re all oriented towards growth?

Anyway, next time you access that bad memory, it’ll be a little less bad. You can also bring up that nasty memory, really let yourself be in it, and then imagine someone nice being there or you having a magical unicorn to jump on and escape. Next time you access the memory, the unicorn will be there and the memory will have less power. I know, just what you want – a head full of unicorns.

Your memories have power over you (unless you’re an awesome super-meditator), but you also have power over your memories. And that, my friends, is pretty weird, wonderful, and totally awesome. Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking

I went for a jog in Post yesterday, and it was way too muddy to ride. So, that’s out, and means that Hospital is also probably too muddy. So, you’ve got Syncline and the Gorge 400, but the 400 has a bunch of trees down in the last quarter mile. So, I guess that leaves you with Syncline and gravel grinding today.

Upcoming Events

There’s a trail run at 8am at Post Canyon this morning. You probably want to bring your grippy shoes – I was wishing I’d had mine yesterday. The Cold Lap ride is at 3pm, and they’ve decided to add one more (with biathlon) next weekend. There are three community yoga classes tomorrow: 9am at Yoga Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s also an 11am community meditation at Flow Yoga in Hood River tomorrow.

Have an awesome day today!
