Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

After a period of steady light rain overnight, the temps dropped enough on Mt. Hood to switch the rain to snow. The snow level will drop to around 2000′ today, holding until Sunday morning. Perhaps an inch of snow will fall this morning before the sky turns clear and sunny. High clouds move in tonight. Wind will be W 25 early, W 15 in the afternoon, and SW 10-15 overnight.

Sunday starts off cloudy. Precip moves in mid-afternoon, unfortunately falling as not-frozen precipitation. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning and 6500-7000′ in the afternoon. The mountain will see about 1/4” rain overnight. Boo hiss. Wind will be SW 20 or so all day and all night.

Monday starts off clear and turns cloudy in the afternoon with light rain or mixed precip overnight. The snow level will be 6500′ for much of the day, 6000′ when the precip hits, and 5000′ in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. Mt. Hood will receive 1/10” rain overnight, so not much at all.

Tuesday looks colder with the first significant snowfall we’ve seen in a while. I use the word “significant” loosely here, because even an inch of snow would seem that way at this point! Anyway, the snow level on Tuesday will start at 5000′ and drop to around 1500′ in the afternoon. The mountain will see a couple inches during the day and a few inches overnight.

Looking long-range, both the GFS and the Euro bring in a shot of heavy rain on Thursday night. That said, the heaviest precip, the bullseye so to speak, is forecast to be to our north. At this point, it’s looking like the mountain will see an inch or two of rain, but long-range forecasting tends to be imprecise and inaccurate. Let’s hold this forecast lightly.

Something to not hold lightly is the fact that my birthday is in a couple days. I would be much appreciative if you’d send me a birthday card at PO Box 841 in Hood River, 97031. Thank you for taking the time and sharing a few words with me. Also, happy new year!

Random Morning Thoughts

People often don’t do things because they are afraid of “what might happen”. Taking a closer look at this often reveals that we are not actually afraid of what will happen; we are afraid of our own reactions to what might happen. We might fear feeling like a failure. We might fear the grief that comes with losing a relationship. We might even fear the joy and recognition that comes with a big success – we fear being embarrassed at being in the spotlight.

The difference between fearing an outcome and fearing an emotional response is subtle but important. We have no control over outcomes, and we can create agitation and worry attempting to create a sense of control. We do have control over how we engage with our emotions.

Being afraid of strong emotions keeps us trapped in a life where strong emotions are avoided. This limits our engagement with all possibilities. And the longer we avoid strong emotions, the more constricted and constrained our lives become.

The antidote to this is to lean into strong emotions. Let them arise, hang out in them, and watch them pass away. Pay careful attention to the fact that you survived the experience, even if it didn’t feel like you would in the midst of it. It’s not fun. But it’s also not going to kill you or damage you permanently. And someday you may come to appreciate your capacity to feel things deeply. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Saturday, we’ll have light and variable wind this morning. By 11am or so, the wind will pick up to gusty 8-13 in the western Gorge and gusty 21-26 east of The Dalles. Sunday looks like E 15-20 near Rooster Rock all day with 10-15 near Steven’s Locks. Monday looks like E 20-25. If Tuesday’s forecast holds, we’ll have high pressure offshore and low pressure in the desert, for relatively steady westerlies at 23-27. I wouldn’t place a bet on that, but it’s worth keeping an eye on if that would make you happy. The river temp is currently… cold.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s damp out there this morning with high overcast sky. Looks like we’ll have fistered sun today. Temps will be in the low to mid 30’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. 78% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks high overcast. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 40’s in the afternoon. Light east wind. No rainbows. Monday looks partly cloudy in the morning. Temps will be in the low 30’s early (if it’s clear) and low 40’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

I’ll be totally honest – I’ve been gone for a week and I’m not sure what the trail conditions are like. As far as I know, Post Canyon remains closed to all users to protect delicate dirt from winter damage. Please respect this, even if you think it doesn’t apply to you.

Upcoming Events

It’s Saturday, and that means you can join the Dirty Fingers crew for a reasonably paced, just-for-fun Cold Lap ride at 3pm today. Coming up on Sunday, there are three free yoga classes: 9am at Samadhi in White Salmon, 4pm YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm restorative yoga at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s pickup touch rugby at 11am at the Hood River Marina on Sunday morning too, and that’s open to all ages.

Have an awesome day today!
