Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a light wind, partly cloudy morning in the Gorge. Later today, mid-afternoon or so, a weak weather system will pass by far to the north and bump the wind up into the moderate range. Until then, we’ll see a morning of west wind at 10-13 at most, with many areas under the 10mph mark. Around 2pm, as this weather system moves inland, we’ll see the wind pick up to gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Rufus with 13-16 or so at Arlington late in the afternoon. That’s not quite what they’d have hoped for at the A-Town Throwdown windsports contest today, but it’s better than nothing. Today is also opening day of sailing season in Cascade Locks (as well as a gear sale at the Renewal Workshop), so the free sailboat rides and BBQ should have plenty of wind. River flow is down to 318kcfs this morning and river temp is 58 degrees.

Before we go any further, I’d like to mention that Northwave has a new sail. They are having a contest to name it. If you would like to submit a name, send an email to northwave@northwavesails.com. That weather system moves inland overnight and early Sunday morning. High pressure builds in behind, setting up a light wind day. We’ll see 10-13 pretty much all day from Stevenson to The Dalles, with a chance of some early-morning 10-13 further east. (continued after the chart)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

Looking ahead to Monday, we’ll still be under the influence of a ridge of high pressure. That’ll start us off with east wind at 10-15. A system approaching in the afternoon will push cooler air inland, bringing back the west wind. Models have been trending later with this system, so timing will be key. As of right now, it looks like we’ll have westerlies at 13-16 by 5pm and 22-25 from Stevenson to Rufus after 5pm.

Tuesday starts off with a solid marine layer in Portland, high pressure off the coast, and lower pressure in the desert. There’s also a weather system predicted to move inland in the morning. All that should combine for gusty westerlies at 27-32 pretty much all day from Swell to Arlington. Wednesday looks steadier with continued strong west wind at 28-32. The general picture is starting to shift from a heat wave to a west wind pattern for the latter half of next week, but there’s still not enough of a consensus to place bets.

Random Morning Thoughts

We humans often fixate on outcomes. We define success as achieving a particular end goal. When we do this, we miss out on all the other changes and achievements that might occur on the path. This becomes deeply problematic if things don’t go the way we expected.

For example, we may be working towards a promotion at work. In service of that, we learn new skills, we throw ourselves into projects, we cultivate positive relationships with coworkers and supervisors. We do everything ‘right’, and then the promotion goes to someone else. We feel like a failure, or we feel disappointed, sad and angry because we didn’t achieve the outcome we wanted.

We forget to celebrate all the great things that happened along the way, all the thing we learned. All the ways we’ve grown.

How are you doing this in your life? What endpoints are you focused on? Goal are okay – don’t get me wrong. But if you forget to stop and appreciate the little achievements along the way, you’re missing out on much of the good that’s already in your life. Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking

With all the rain we’ve had in the last few days, the dirt is bound to be fantastic. Post might be a bit slick this morning, especially up high where it rained all day. Maybe wait until this afternoon, especially if you’re shuttling, so you don’t damage the trails. I heard Whoopdee was great yesterday afternoon. Syncline and Hospital are likely to be good as well! In road biking news, today is the Gorge Ride, so expect lots of bikes in the Rowena Crest area. Next weekend is the Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour.

Upcoming Events

Today’s a super busy day for events. Arlington has the A-Town throwdown windsports event with music and a vendor village. White Salmon has the annual Backyard Half Marathon, benefiting the cross-country team. The Gorge Ride happens in The Dalles today, with proceeds benefiting the Historic Columbia River Highway. There’s a shuttle day at Sandy Ridge to benefit the Northwest Trails Alliance, and there’s the summer solstass 50k ultramarathon in Camas. Cascade Locks has a gear sale at the Renewal Workshop and opening day of sailing season at the Marina.

Tomorrow’s fathers’ day, and dads can standup paddle for free at the Big Winds Shack at the Event Site tomorrow from noon to 3. The Discovery Center in The Dalles is also free for dads tomorrow. There’s a beginners ping pong clinic tomorrow at the Hood River Armory at 10am followed by open play at 10:30.

Have an awesome day today!
