Saturday. It’s Earth Day. What are you doing to protect our planet?

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The day started out partly cloudy on Mt. Hood, but clouds will move in later along with (most likely) some sprinkles. The quantity of sprinkles depends on how far east those sprinkles travel, and they’ll be gone by this evening. The snow level today will be 9000′ early, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ after midnight. We’ll see .1-.3” sprinkles (or maybe even wet snowflakes) this afternoon, for no accumulation. Wind today will be SW 10-15 early, SW 20 in the afternoon, and SW 10-15 after midnight.

Sunday starts off mostly cloudy. Snow starts up around 8am and doesn’t stop for the next several day. Hi, Winter. Nice to see you again after a day or two of spring. The snow level Sunday will be 3500′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ after midnight. About .3-.4” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 2-3” of dense snow. Another .5” WV falls overnight, for 3-4” of dense snow. Wind Sunday will be SW 10-15 for most of the day, WSW 30 overnight, and SW 15 after midnight.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued

The only resort open on Monday is Timberline. As of right now, Meadows is saying they will allow hiking during the week, but you’ll probably want to double-check their website each day given the amount of snow in the forecast. Anyway, the snow level Monday will be 2500′ in the morning, 5000′ in the evening, and 2500′ after midnight. Around .8” WV will fall during the day, for 6-8” of new snow. Another .8” WV falls overnight, for 6-8” of additional snow. Wind Monday will be SW 15 early, WSW 30 in the afternoon, and W 40 after midnight.

Same thing Tuesday: only T-Line will be open, and it’ll be snowing all day. The models currently show the snow level at 3000′ early with a bump to 5500′ in the afternoon and evening and 2500′ after midnight. As of right now, .6” WV is forecast during the day, for 3-5” of dense snow. Another .6” is forecast overnight, for another 3-5”. Wind Tuesday will be W 40 early, SW 15 in the afternoon, SW 25 in the evening, and W 45 after midnight. Additional snow is forecast for Wednesday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We’re starting off with easterlies at 30-35 at Rooster and 20-25 at Stevenson, but those will shut off within a couple hours. We’ll see calm wind for the late morning period and then westerlies after a front moves through around noon. By 2pm or so, we’ll have west 25-29 from Rowena to Arlington. The western Gorge will likely remain under the clouds today with gusty W 12-15.

Sunday looks like a showery day in the western Gorge, so you’ll have to drive a bit east for steady west wind. We’ll have light westerlies at less than 10mph to start the day. By noon, the wind will pick up to W 10-13 from Mosier eastward. By 3pm, we’ll have W 13-16 from Mosier eastward with W 7-11 from Stevenson to Bingen.

Monday currently looks very rainy in the western Gorge. The wind will be light and variable everywhere in the morning. After 3pm, we’ll see gusty 15-18 east of the low clouds (probably east of The Dalles) and 7-11 under the clouds. Tuesday looks like W wind at less than 10mph.

Random Morning Thoughts

Today is April 22nd, Earth Day. It can be hard to comprehend that our human actions are changing the climate. Our brains are not designed to comprehend the vastness of the planet or the time scale on which climate change happens. It’s difficult to gain a visceral understanding of the link between driving a car (for example) and less snow on the mountain, flooding in coastal cities, or increasingly strong hurricanes.

It’s also imperative that we make this connection and take action.

Look out your window. The sky you see, the air you breathe, the water you drink, it’s all connected with the sky, air and water for the 7 billion humans and trillions of other living beings upon this planet. We are interconnected by the very molecules that sustain life.

Our individual choices can help the planet or harm the planet. We, with our Hummers and our well-lit houses and our large families are appallingly selfish. We steal from the well-being of the future billions to live lives of comfort and luxury now. It is our responsibility to limit our consumption to create space for those who will come after us. What are you doing to protect the world for your descendants?

But individual action is not enough. We need our world leaders to think long-term. We need to prioritize our children and grandchildren’s future, even if it comes at some cost to us as individuals and nations. Turning inward and fighting amongst ourselves will not help. Working together to change the policies of our nation will help. Pick up the phone and call your representative and demand that they protect this planet. It’s the only one we have. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

Yesterday was warm and sunny, so Post is probably good today. Whoopdee, Hospital, Columbia Hills (wildflowers!!!) Kitchen Sink, and the lower parts of Nestor Peak are open. NO DOGS on Hospital Hill, even your dog. In road biking news, today will be good until sprinkles arrive this afternoon. The blossoms are blooming from Hood River to The Dalles, and the Balsamroot is blooming on the backside of Sevenmile Hill. There’s a trail work party on Sunday morning at 9am in Post Canyon.

Upcoming Events

First, tho, a very not Earth Day event: The Oregon Trail Rally is in Dufur today and in The Dalles and Goldendale tomorrow. Today: a beach cleanup at the Spit in Hood river at 10am. Free e-Bike and SUP demos at the Hood River Event Site 12-4. Cherry Festival run/walk in The Dalles. Sunday: Swap meet from 8 to 1 at Windance, trail work party from 9-1 at Family Man. Cherry of a Ride, benefiting St. Mary’s Academy, is in The Dalles on Sunday. Oh, and the Lyrids meteor shower continues tonight.

Weekly weekend events: Spanish-language yoga at Flow at 7am today, a trail run at 8am in Post Canyon. Tomorrow: community yoga at 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga Hood River.

Have an awesome day today!
