Gorge Wind Forecast

As I was driving off to my training in Portland yesterday, I saw lots and lots and lots of whitecaps on the river. I hope all of you, or at least most of you, were able to get out to play. Today’s weather will be influenced by a bit of a low pressure trough overhead, but that shouldn’t have a huge negative impact on the wind. With early gradients at .11 and .04 (temp is 70 and flow is 104kcfs), we’re setting up for a Columbia play date.

Expect wind in the 16-19 range this morning from Viento to Hood River with other locations in the 12-15 range. As flow turns more northerly and high pressure builds, the winds should back off east of The Dalles. By late morning or early afternoon, we should have 22-25 between Cascade Locks and Mosier. The Lyle to Doug’s stretch should join in this afternoon, and Rufus looks 50/50 for 13-16.

Tomorrow’s a little difficult to forecast from looking at the models. The combination of strong offshore high pressure and heat inland should be enough to give us more than the GFS suggest. Let’s go with 10-13 in the morning from Cascade Locks to Swell. This is mostly a guess, but I think we’ll see 16-19 in the afternoon between Cascade Locks and Hood River with 10-13 near Mosier and 5-10 near Lyle.

Looking at Apoceclipse Monday, models are currently suggesting light east wind all day. This is the kind of setup where the wind can outpace model predictions, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we actually end up with 10-13. More importantly, we are expecting clear sky. Tuesday looks light in the morning and 12-15 in the afternoon, and Wednesday’s currently looking like gusty 24-28. Keep an eye on Thursday – the long-range model is predicting 28-32.

Random Morning Thoughts

I wish that there was enough space in my life today to write something meaningful here, but alas… I have a 12 hour training that’s a bike ride away. It’s going to be all I can do to show up on time and, after the limited sleep I got last night, participate in a meaningful way. No matter how your day started or you night was last night, see if you too can participate in life in some small meaningful way today. Have an awesome day, awesome person.

Road and Mountain Biking

Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and all other SDS and Kreps lands are closed from today on through the end of fire season. That’s when “significant rain” falls and the fire danger is considered over. Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.

Upcoming Events

Today’s the Skamania County Fair and Timber Festival run and walk and the last day of the fair, so make sure you swing by and check it out. Goldendale has the Festival of Wheels all weekend and a pre-eclipse party tomorrow night. Cascade Locks, the windiest place in the Gorge, has the RS Aero Championships sailboat races. For you mountain bikers looking to give back, the St. Helens Festival of Trails is at Marble Mountain snopark all wekeend.

Troutdale has the Oregon Bigfoot Festival today. If you miss it, your next chance to celebrate Sasquatch is Logtoberfest in Home Valley in October. On the river today, it’s the Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge at Hood River’s waterfront park with standup paddle lessons and SUP racing. Last thing today: the movie Pete’s Dragon is at Jackson Park tonight and Guardians of the Galaxy is at sorosis Park.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
