Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a sunny Saturday morning with not much wind, and the status quo will continue today. A weak cold front this afternoon will nudge the wind up just a bit. We’ll have 11-14 from Viento to Swell this morning with light wind everywhere else. Cascade Locks will pick up to 11-14 as well by late morning. As for this afternoon, I don’t think we’ll see much of a bump… just a few miles per hour to maybe 13-16, if we’re lucky, from Cascade Locks to Hood River. Or maybe it won’t pick up at all and we’ll just have to go to swimming holes and cool off!

A system passing to the north on Sunday combines with a heat low in the desert and a solid offshore high to give us a much-needed gradient kick. We’ll start the day with 14-17 from Viento to Swell. The wind will slowly build during the day to 23-26 from Cascade Locks to Rufus. There’s a slight chance of a surprise 26-30 session in the Swell region if the timing works out just right. There’s also a slight chance that a low pressure system well to our south will fire off some thunderstorms that impact wind strength and quality. All that said, it looks like a decent day for the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest Blowout, open to ALL downwind floating object-human combos.

Looking at Monday, the models have us with light easterly flow. I’m not sure I’m buying that, so let’s not write that one on a stone tablet and file it in the Library of Congress quite yet. Tuesday looks like a light east morning and light westerly afternoon, but timing could have an impact on the afternoon wind strength. The long-range forecast for Wednesday is 27-31.

I should probably start mentioning that I’ll be on a meditation retreat July 28 through August 2nd, so you will have to fend for yourself for a wind forecast during that period. My apologies for the vacay right in the middle of summer, but self-care comes first!

Random Morning Thoughts

As much as I’d love to sit here and reflect on life, each minute I sit is a moment where the mercury climbs a little higher. I want to ride my bike before the temp hits 90 and the dewpoint hits 65. Ah, mugginess. Let’s all find new swimming holes today and play in the water. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Everything’s open and getting dustier by the day. If you have any pull with Mother Nature, schedule us some rain in about two weeks after the cherry harvest is done.

Upcoming Events

Events today include the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest amateur contest in Stevenson and the Meljes 24 North American sailboat racing championships in Cascade Locks – the Meljes boats are planing hulls that can do up to 25 knots, so maybe swing by and check them out, although I don’t think there will be enough wind for any wind-powered object to do 25 knots today! There’s a Gorge Cup windsurfing race at the Event Site in Hood River today and a slider jam at the Hood River Spit tonight.

At 8 today, there’s a group trail run in Post Canyon, and at 9, there’s a trail work party at Starvation Creek. There’s a women’s bike ride from Mountain View Cycles at 9. At dusk this evening, the movie Trolls plays at Sorosis Park for Movies in the Park in The Dalles.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
