Saturday 6/22. Gorge light wind, tons of events, and the SUPERCONNECTOR!

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions and better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation by clicking on the sun and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. No dealing with my hosting provider’s issues. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

New York City Sub Shops make quality sandwiches for hungry athletes the New York way – no frills and no hassle, just quality meats and cheeses on freshly made bread, baked daily. Quarter, half, and whole subs starting at just $3.99. Friendly service. Eclectic artwork. Scrumptious subs. Fresh-baked cookies. Good food fast, not fast food. Visit the shop on Wasco Street in Hood River or one of two locations in Bend. We’re giving away four sub/drink/cookie combos on the email list. =)

Good morning. Yes, this forecast is late. I attempted to sleep in by turning off my alarm. But I only imagined turning off my alarm, and it woke me up. In rebellion, I refused to get out of bed. But it’s such a beautiful day, that the cozy next didn’t win out for long. I’m up. I’m drinking coffee. I’m writing. You’re probably SUPing already, using that glassy water to fuel your daily core workout.

Wind forecast

Not much… Light wind this morning picks up a bit this afternoon, as an approaching front slowly drives west wind into the 10-13 range at Stevenson and Hood River this afternoon. Maybe we’ll see a touch more wind, just enough for slalom sailors and kiters and downwind SUPers to get it on.

Tomorrow starts light, but as that front crosses the Cascades, we’ll see west wind pick up everywhere to 15-18 by early afternoon and 21-24 in the eastern Gorge in the late afternoon. Rain – or showers, at least – could start as early as 8am, meaning you’ll have to head east to the sunshine for any sort of steadiness in the wind.

Monday starts light, picking up to 15-18 later, with very heavy rain starting around 11am. After Monday, a series of low pressure systems off the coast will bring cloudy sky, light wind, and more rain through Wednesday.

Cycling news

Mt. Hood Cycling Classic Time Trial from The Dalles to HR this morning and the Criterium in downtown Hood River this afternoon and evening. Three Summits race is tomorrow. Downhill mountain bike racing at Skibowl today. Enduro racing in Ashland today.

For the rest of us, mere mortals who like to ride bikes, there’s the Superconnector trail work party tomorrow. Meet at Little John at 9am. Bring trail tools if you have them. Otherwise, bring heavy tine rakes. Helmets are required. Bikes are not, but you’ll want a bike to ride after the work party, which should last 3 hours or so.

Crater Lake Rim Road is open this weekend for bicyles and hikers only, so if you happen to be in the area, jump on this rare opportunity.

Other stuff

It’s opening day of sailing season for the Cascade Locks crew, so head on down there for sailboat rides and bbq, wind permitting(?). It’s Family Fun Whitewater day at Northwestern Park with Jackson demos, raft rides with Oregon Rafting Team, and free access to the Wet Planet pool for roll practice. There’s also bbq, and they are requesting you bring a side dish to share.

Windance has an all-weekend demo out at Rufus, with kites, boards, and bbq. Gorge Blues and Brew is today in Stevenson. Finally, the Hood River Saddle Club has an all-weekend mountain trail equestrian event going on. If you want to see people on horses, doing interesting stuff in a competition, swing by there on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
