Monday/Tuesday forecast. Plenty of wind, even for you!

DSC_8144
This is your Monday and Tuesday forecast, as I only have twelve hours between the end of class tonight and the start of class tomorrow morning. If this causes difficulty for you, you can contact the counselor education department at Portland State University! My advisor’s number is 867-5309. Okay, bad jokes aside, here’s your forecast for the next few days. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Monday morning started off with just a few marine clouds scattered across western Oregon and Washington, wind in the low teens from Swell to Doug’s, and a westerly gradient of .09 from Portland to The Dalles. Additional information: the river temp is 69 degrees and flow is 115kcfs at The Dalles. With a .09 gradient, you can expect a quick build to 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier this morning with 23-26 by late morning through the end of the day, eventually filling in at Rowena and Doug’s.

A much stronger marine push on Tuesday morning combines with a desert heat low and the fact that I’m trapped in Portland all day for a sure-fire nuker day on the river. Expect Tuesday Dawn Patrol at 25-29 at Swell (if the clouds don’t push too far), Mosier and Doug’s/Rowena. The wind will quickly pick up to 28-32 from Swell to Rufus, filling in at 24-28 at Stevenson and Arlington later in the day.

Less marine clouds on Wednesday dampen down the wind’s enthusiasm (but not yours) just a bit. Expect Dawn Patrol from Viento to Mosier at 22-25. by late morning, the wind will pick up to 24-27 in that stretch, filling in from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon.

Thursday currently looks like 16-19 to start, fading midday, and picking back up to 13-16 in the afternoon. The strongest wind Thursday will be near Hood River in the morning and from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

For this morning’s thought, I’m going to borrow from Crystal’s thoughts at her Sunday morning yoga class. We go through life creating thought patterns and expectations about how our experience will play out. Sometimes this manifests as stories about our abilities. For example, we may think that we ride our bike up a certain hill in a certain gear. We may think that our legs only move in a certain way when we’re jogging. Maybe we only carve waves just-so hard when we’re kiting or windsurfing because that’s the way our bodies have learned.

Maybe we’re quite satisfied with the way we do things.

It can be eye-opening to go at our sports from a not-knowing stance, allowing our bodies to push against the limitations our minds have set. For instance, next time you’re carving a wave, rather than automatically carving the way you carve, let your body lead the way; pick a spot where you want the carve to end, and let your body take you there. If you’re riding a bike up a hill, stand instead of sitting, or sit instead of standing, and see what your body can do. Or if you’re in a yoga class, stop telling yourself “this is how I do this pose”, and sink into your core and let your body, not your mind, take over.

You can do this in any sport or any situation. The body contains a lot of wisdom, and we’ve been trained to ignore it. Do your sport, let yourself feel your whole body, and move from that body-centered place. You might be surprised what you find by interrupting your usual routine.

Gosh I’m sore from that yoga class yesterday… Have an awesome couple days. See y’all Wednesday.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
