Monday/Tuesday Forecast: get your suntan on!

MikeSRainbow
There’s not much wind out there this morning, and given the fact that there’s even less wind than there was at 7am when I woke up, it’s not going to be windy today. That’s great if you like no wind sports or need to spray chemicals in your orchard. Enjoy! If you’re going to play in the Columbia today, the river temp is 59 degrees and flow is 216kcfs. 1151 Spring Chinook made it past Bonneville yesterday, and the fish stand at Windance is open for the season! Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

On to tomorrow, we’ll start off with east wind at 5-10 at Stevenson and Rooster. The easterlies will build to 15-20 at Stevenson midday and 20-25 at Rooster Rock. In the afternoon, we’ll see east wind at 5-8 or less from Viento eastward to Arlington. Be aware that there will be easterlies above river level if you’re planning on road biking.

Looking at Wednesday, the heat low shifts east of the Cascades during the day, coupling with high pressure out in the Pacific Ocean. That will set us up for a light westerly start, followed by W 12-15 at Stevenson by 11am. From then on, the wind will quickly build to 24-28 from Hood River to Maryhill, holding through Sunset.

Thursday currently looks like 17-20 or so, all day long. High pressure builds back in the next couple of days, bringing more hot and glassy weather. At some point, something will end that warm weather, hopefully in Classic Gorge Style. Fingers crossed that it’s on the weekend when we can all take advantage of it.

Finally, I’ll just keep reminding you of this one: CGWA has a bunch of contests happening this summer – photo, Strava, and video. Get more information about those contests right here.

I recommend you do get the wind today if you’re a Wind Johnnie, because we’re going to take at least a couple of days off as high pressure builds back in late tonight. Monday may start off with light westerlies at 7-11 or maybe 10-13. Models say the river will go glassy by mid-morning. This is one of those scenarios where reality may beat the models, in which case we could see 7-11 through the afternoon, but I wouldn’t put money on it.

Tuesday looks glassy near Hood River in the morning with easterlies near Hood River at 5-7 in the afternoon. In the western Gorge, we’ll have easterlies at 10-15 early. Stevenson will peak midday at E 15-20 and Rooster will peak midday at E 20-25. Given this forecast, I am potentially looking for a ride home from the downtown Portland area (or within a few miles of there) for me and my bike on Tuesday evening around 6:45.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

No, I don’t feel like forecasting snow today.

Random Morning Thoughts

As some of you may have figured out, I live in Hood River and go to grad school in Portland. The commute gets repetitive, even though it’s beautiful. In service of variety, I like to ride my bike from Wyeth to PSU when the weather, wind, and a ride home all line up. Now, I know that sounds really far, because people think that Portland and Hood River are a universe apart, but it’s only 4 hours by bike. This isn’t my point, though. My point is that people seem quite happy to give me a ride home, even if it inconveniences them a little. I, however, worry about being an imposition.

This, as you might have noticed, is a bit of a disconnect, and one that many of us make. We don’t want to be a burden on others, but others are happy to help us. And generally speaking, we are happy to help others out. Being social beings, we are rewarded by our nervous system and our mind for doing things that connect us to others.

When we worry about impacting others, it can be helpful to turn the situation around and ask, “How would I feel if I were in the other person’s shoes? Would I be feeling good helping them the way they are helping me?” Now, I’d like to point out that an intellectual understanding probably won’t change your felt sense of being a burden. But understanding that there’s a disconnect there will point you in the direction of a place worthy of self-exploration, either alone or in the company of a supportive therapist.

And why would you bother exploring this aspect of your self? Because helping others out feels good, and receiving help feels good too when you learn how to receive skillfully. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to get my stuff ready to ride to school tomorrow. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 716 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a beautiful sunny day (it’s Monday), and that’s how things will be for the next three days. Make sure you water your garden! Temps will be in the low 50’s today and the upper 70’s this afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks sunny with temps in the upper 40’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks sunny. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the upper 80’s (yup, hot!) in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate to strong westerlies late. No rainbows. We might see some clouds on Thursday, but the rest of the extended forecast looks hot and dry and sunny.

Road and Mountain Biking

What’s there to say today? Post is a very mixed bag of awesome and dry. Many of our upper-elevation trails have opened for the season, enough that it’s easier to send you to my website that to list them all. There is a trail work party in upper Post this Saturday, led by the nice folks at Hood River County. It’s at 9am, and you’ll be meeting at Binn’s Hill Staging Area. In road biking news, you’re going to be pooping your spandex in excitement today and tomorrow, as we’ll see light wind all day long. Wednesday morning looks good too. Today’s probably your best shot, as Tuesday and Wednesday will max out in the mid 80’s.

Upcoming Events

Today’s community events, all of them free or by donation, include meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon and Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1. There’s Community Yoga at Samadhi at 6, pickup Kickball at 6 at Bingen’s Daubenspeck Park, pickup basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30.

Coming up on the weekend the Hood to River Relay happens on Saturday. They’re looking for volunteers, so if you want to help out, visit their website. Hood River County has a work party in Post Canyon next Saturday too. On Sunday, there’s a 1k, 5k and 10k race as part of Springfest in White Salmon.

Looking ahead to next weekend, it’s the Hood to River Relay – sign up to compete, or sign up as a volunteer. There’s also a trail work party happening in Post Canyon next Saturday.

Have an awesome day today!
