Monday. Wind wind wind wind wind.

freewayrainbow
It’s quite cloudy out there this morning, cloudier than I suspected it would be, and that, of course, will have an impact on the wind today. Holy heck, that was a lot of commas in that last sentence! Anyway, as an upper level low pressure system moves to the south today, our gradients and wind should improve. That’ll happen this afternoon. So, expect 10-13 or so through much of the Gorge this morning, picking up to 13-16 pretty much everywhere (maybe not Stevenson) by 2pm. As the low really clears the area and high pressure builds off the coast, we should see the wind pick up to 22-25 from Mosier to Rufus in the middle of the afternoon. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Tuesday starts off with marine clouds in the western Gorge and sunshine out east. We’ll have westerlies at 12-15 from Hood River ot Arlington to start the day. By early afternoon, we should see 22-24 from Hood River to The Dalles with 15-18 at Stevenson and Maryhill and less wind in the far eastern Gorge.

High pressure really takes hold offshore on Wednesday, setting up up for a Classic Gorge Day. Expect Dawn Patrol at 22-26 from Swell to Doug’s, quickly picking up to 30+ from Swell to Arlington. The mid to late afternoon looks super-richter-windy, so bring your smallest gear, a helmet, and maybe even a PFD, because swimming in after your gear blows away is not a fun or easy thing to do. Thursday looks equally windy, although an approaching low pressure system late in the day may destabilize the wind field. If I were you, I’d be chasing Wednesday and having Thursday as a backup.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Look like T-Line had 3” of new snow on Sunday. Fresh tracks, anyone?

Random Morning Thoughts

As y’all know, because you didn’t get a forecast all weekend, I was sitting on my butt meditating for most of the weekend. I went into this retreat without any expectations or anything with which to compare the experience. That, apparently, worked in my favor – several people told me afterwards that this retreat was particularly intense, with much more sitting (meditating) than your average retreat.

When we do stuff, we usually go into whatever we’re doing with an expectation. We get attached to some sort of expected outcome. For example, we see the number 32 on the Arlington sensor, and we start driving, expecting big waves and strong wind. When we arrive at the beach, because the sensor reads high, we’re disappointed by the reality.

We do this all the time, of course, living in a future where the wind is strong, the dirt is perfect, we get that job, the meal that’s coming is the best we’ve had, this first date will turn into marriage (or good sex), etc. Sometimes we do the opposite – we assume the worst will happen, and spend time in the present suffering for a potential future outcome. We do this in hope of preparing ourselves for disappointment, but the overall amount of time we spend in pain is much worse than if we just let the future arrive.

So, yeah. It’s okay to plan for the future, but try not to get yourself hooked to a future outcome. The more you can be okay with whatever arrives down the road, the more you can be okay right here and right now. And the more flexibility and adaptability and resilience you’ll have when the future does arrive. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s most definitely cloudy out there this morning, and there are most definitely sprinkles falling on Underwood Mountain right now, meaning sprinkles could also fall on your house today. Expect a cloudy day with sunbreaks this afternoon and a possibility of sprinkles all day. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate westerlies. 95% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks partly cloudy. Temps will be near 50 early and near 70 in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 2% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks partly cloudy with a slight chance of sprinkles. Temps will be near 50 early and in the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. 2% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Because I was sitting on my butt all weekend, I’m not sure about the condition of the trails. I suspect they’re still doing pretty good, considering the rain we had last week. But then again, I’m certain Dog River is destroyed for the season after the Super D on Sunday, and there are certain trails in Post that took a hammering over the weekend from the Enduro race. Well, anyway… we’re not going to see much rain the next three days, but it does look possible we’ll see rain later this week. As for road biking, today is your best bet until, well, I don’t know when. Tuesday through Thursday look quite windy!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1, followed by pickup basketball at the Town Hall at 6:30. There’s also community Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center tonight at 6:30.

Looking at tomorrow, there’s community yoga at 4:30 at Flow, pickleball at 5:15 at May Street Elementy, ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30, meditation at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30, and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30.

Looking at the weekend, Skibowl’s Adventure Park opens for the season, and it’s free all weekend for active duty military. North Bonneville has the color dash run Saturday, the Sisters Stampede is Sunday. There’s a catfish derby in The Dalles Saturday and Sunday, and there’s mountain bike races all weekend long at Skibowl.

Have an awesome day today!
