Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s overcast this morning as a weak front is making its way inland. As always, this sort of dynamic weather system will make the wind unreliable. That said, as the front moves inland this afternoon, we will see the wind pick up. Westerlies of 10-13 near Swell this morning will pick up to gusty 18-22 this afternoon between Swell and The Dalles. The western Gorge will likely see on-and-off sprinkles, keeping the wind between Cascade Locks and Viento in the 10-14 range.

That front moves eastward overnight and high pressure builds inland during the day Tuesday. We’ll see calm wind in the morning and light easterlies, perhaps 10mph or so, near Rooster Rock and Stevenson after noon.

Offshore flow increases on Wednesday. We’ll see east wind at 25-30 near Rooster Rock and Stevenson pretty much all day, although the morning wind will be more consistent and steady. Looking ahead to Thursday, the GFS is predicting a weak low pressure system will move up the coast. That will keep the gradient easterly, but knock down the wind consistency. For now, let’s call it east 20-25 on Thursday.

The long range models suggest we’ll see a two-day period of west wind on Friday and Saturday and then a return to east wind on Sunday.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s Monday, and this particular Monday also happens to be the first day of school for fall quarter. That means I have a very busy day. As much as I’d like to take time to reflect on life, the universe, and everything this morning, I need to get moving. Reflection can wait for the drive.

Speaking of driving, so often we zone out when driving. We listen to the radio, turn up our tunes, or daydream. These things are totally okay to do. We can make them more enjoyable by trying to be fully present. If you, like me, spend a lot of time driving, you can use that time to cultivate inner peace by cultivating mindfulness.

If you’re listening to music, be fully present with it; notice how it impacts you. If you’re enjoying some news, do the same, and perhaps reflect on how those news stories have a bearing on your life. If you’re daydreaming, notice what unmet emotional needs those daydreams address. And enjoy your commute. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

The sky is overcast and pink as I write this due to an offshore front and the rising sun. We’ll see an intermittently cloudy day today as that front makes its way onshore. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and low 70’s this afternoon. Moderate west wind. .05% chance of rainbows. Tuesday may start off partly cloudy but will be sunny in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks sunny. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and near 80 in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

According to the USFS website, the McClellan Meadows trail has reopened, meaning the Falls Creek shuttle is still an option. I didn’t call them, though, so I’m only reporting what I read. In Post Canyon, the following trails are currently closed to all users: Dirt Surfer (170/172), 160, 130, Borderline (133), Spaghetti Factory (116), and 197. Trails not closed are riding very, very nice. Trails are also riding nice on Hospital Hill. I haven’t tested Whoopdee and Ronnoc, but I bet they are both good too!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include meditation at noon at Trinity Natural Medicine and at 7 at Bethel Congregational Church in White Salmon. There’s $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30, pickup kickball at Daubenspeck Park in Bingen at 6, and three free yoga classes: 6pm at Samadhi, 6:30 at the Mt. Hood Town Hall, and 6:45 YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles. Coming up Sunday, Cooper Spur Ski Resort is hosting a cyclocross race.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
