Monday. Time to go check the dirt, everyone!

DSC_4273-Edit
It’s another light wind start to the day, and that means … well, it doesn’t really mean anything, but I notice there aren’t many fishing boats out today. The first counts at Bonneville yesterday were 5035 Chinook and 693 Steelhead. And… I see that I’m totally sidetracked from the wind forecast… Anyway, there was a .02 (pdx-dls) gradient at 7am. That will pick up today as a weak cold front impacts the PNW, bringing high clouds but very little chance of rain. We’ll see the westerlies increase as this system approaches. The Stevenson to Mosier stretch should climb to 13-16 by noon. The wind will pick up to gusty 20-23 this afternoon from Stevenson to Doug’s, possibly out to Rufus as well. Expect the wind near Hood River to be short-lived, so jump on it if that’s your plan. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow sees high pressure build across the Northwest, and that will limit the gradients and thus limit the wind. Expect light westerlies at 10 or less first thing in the morning with westerlies at 7-11 from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon. It’s worth nothing that the high-res model is predicting westerlies tomorrow afternoon and the low-res model is predicting easterlies, so this isn’t a sure thing.

Wednesday starts off with light and variable wind and picks up to E 13-16 midday at Stevenson and Rooster with E 5-10 in the rest of the Gorge. Thursday, as of right now, looks windier, with easterlies at 30-35 at Rooster. Sadly, I don’t drive to school on Thursday, so you will have to take advantage of Rooster Rock for me.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m not feeling super inspired this morning. As I sit here contemplating what to write, my cat is running back and forth meowing. I have no idea what she wants; she does this every morning after she eats. Sometimes I worry when I can’t figure out what she wants. I wonder if my lack of attunement will lead to her being depressed or if she’ll decide she doesn’t like her human any more.

You can learn a lot about yourself by having a pet. How much of an effort do you make to ensure your pet’s needs are met? When they come to you looking for something (food, petting, play, to go out), how do you react? Are you happy to do that? Irritated? What do you tell yourself when you can’t figure out what your pet wants?

When your pet ignores you, what stories do you tell yourself? Do you wonder what you did wrong and how you can repair the relationship? Are you concerned your animal might be sick, and do you smother it with vet visits? Do you think you’re unlovable when your pet spends the night in the other room?

These interactions you have with your pet likely mirror the reactions you have with and toward people. See if you can watch your human-animal interactions closely and catch the similarities to how you relate to friends and family. You might just be able to learn something and change your world in a positive way. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I believe my cat wants to play!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy in the Gorge this morning with a few leftover high clouds from an approaching front and a few low clouds from the Nothing’s attempt to devour Fantasia. Don’t worry – the Nothing won’t win today. Expect sunshine this morning and increasing high clouds in the afternoon as a weak cold front moves in. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the low 70’s this afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late. No rainbows.

Tomorrow may start off with some Nothing, but it will clear by late morning. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind. Repeat that on Wednesday, with less chance of Nothing. The next chance for anything different is Saturday, when we’ll likely see rain in the afternoon, followed by showers and rainbows on Sunday.

Road and Mountain Biking

I still haven’t had a report from you folks about the dirt quality after Saturday’s rain, so I’m going to have to check it out myself today, I guess! Get it while you can, because the next rain isn’t until next Saturday. In road biking news, this afternoon will get windy, but tomorrow and Wednesday both look like light wind, sunny days with temps in the 70’s. Perfect, in other words, for road biking.
