Monday. Sunshine!!! Spring skiing! Great dirt!

2015-08-18_06-59-32 M=C
See what happens… I take a few days off and I drive away the snow-making pattern. Looks like we’ll see high pressure and unseasonably warm weather on the mountain for the next few days. It’ll probably take a couple days for the snow to settle into corn, but once it does, the skiing should be quite fun.

Expect sunshine on Mt. Hood today. The free air freezing level will be 12,000′ with high temps at 5000′ climbing into the 50’s. Wind will be light and variable for much of the day, becoming SE 10 in the afternoon. That’ll probably just feel light and variable, so I’m not even sure why I mentioned it! Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tuesday looks sunny. The free air freezing level will be 12,000′ in the morning, dropping dramatically (or not) to 11,000′ in the afternoon. 5000′ temps will be in the low to mid 50’s. Wind on Tuesday will be S 25 early and SW 20 in the afternoon.

Wednesday starts off sunny with a few high clouds and becomes progressively more cloudy during the day. There’s a chance of sprinkles after 10pm, but there’s also a chance there won’t be any sprinkles. The free air freezing level Wednesday will be 10,000′ in the morning, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ overnight. Wind will be SW 25 in the morning, W 25 in the afternoon and SW 15-20 overnight.

There’s not really any significant precipitation in the forecast in the 7 days of the extended GFS model run. That could change, of course, but for now, it’s looking like we’re going to have spring-style skiing for a little bit.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s totally nuking out there this morning with the iWind/iKite sensor reading 48 at Rooster Rock. You can expect easterlies at 40-50 all day today. With temps maxing out in the 50’s, or maybe even higher today, it could be a really nice day on the water. River temp is 41 degrees. I, sadly, am way too sick to go windsurfing, so you’ll have to go for me. Tomorrow starts off with east wind at 40-50 and drops to E 20-30 in the afternoon. Wednesday looks like E 10-15 early and light and variable in the afternoon.

I don’t normally post a surf forecast (and no, I’m sorry, but I’m not going to add it to the report on a regular basis), but I did notice today’s excellent combination: 70 degrees at the north coast with east wind at 10-15 and a W swell 6′ at 19 seconds, secondary swell W 4′ at 12 seconds. I believe that qualifies as “epic” for Oregon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was at my Hakomi training all weekend, which is part of why I took the whole weekend off. Also, I am exhausted and sick. Anyway, that’s not my point, as I expect many of you are also exhausted and sick and still doing your jobs! Anyway, as a first-year grad student, I’m the baby at this training. The people around me have been doing this work for real, and they have a broad base set of skills to rely on.

It occurred to me this weekend that if I am the baby, I might as well take the approach of a baby and just learn and ask for help and suggestions.

We can all do that in our larger lives and benefit. Each of us, no matter our age, has a certain set of experiences and skills. We rely on those to get us through each day. Maybe they work well, and maybe they don’t. But much like babies, we can learn. Our brains are neuroplastic – they can be rewired until the day we die.

If we approach each day with a child’s mindset, with curiosity and openness, we can have new experiences. We can learn without being ashamed of our clumsiness. We can let ourselves be the center of attention without awkwardness. We can receive love without fear of recrimination. We can, essentially, let the world re-parent us in the style we choose. We can change our expectations of the world and our experience of being in the world, just by approaching the world with a child’s filter-free mindset.

Of course, as adults, we have the added advantage of discrimination. We can step in and filter out or stop unpleasant experiences. And it’s important to do that. And it’s also important to be filter-free about experiences that carry the potential for new ways of being. Like skipping school when you’re sick and knowing it’s not the end of the world. That’s what I’m going to do today. Y’all be well and have an awesome day. Enjoy the sunshine!

Road and Mountain Biking

I’ve been out of town for a few days, but I betcha anything the riding is good in Post and at Syncline. There are trees down on GP and 8-Track if you’re headed to Post Canyon. Whoopdee? Well, Steve’s going to have to let me know, and I sure he will after he reads this! Hospital? Hard to say given the amount of snow on the east side of Underwood Mountain. I bet you could ride the trails on the front side of Hospital Hill… maybe

Upcoming Events

It’s Monday, and that means there’s Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm. At 6:30 tonight, there’s Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30 and there’s yoga at Samadhi at 6:30. Those three classes are free or by donation. There’s Aikido at Trinity Natural Medicine in Hood River at 6pm. Not free, but awesome. Coming up tomorrow, there’s Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30.

There’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu from 5pm to 9pm. There’s pickup touch rugby at 5pm at the ball fields next to Jackson Park. Tomorrow night at 6:30, it’s the Return of the Monks to Yoga Samadhi’s weekly meditation group. Ajahns Sudanto and Karunadhammo will be leading the 30(ish) minute sit and dhamma talk. It kinda sounds religious, but it’s not, really. It’s just cool folks practicing mindfulness together.

Have an awesome day today!
