Monday. Ready for some Classic Gorge Setup? Hope so! Here comes the wind!

DSC_3429
We’re about to have a pattern shift in the synoptic scale weather setup, and that’s going to set us up for a windy week in the Gorge. That change will start this afternoon as a very weak weather disturbance moves through the Northwest, taking us from a zero-wind morning to a whitecapping afternoon. Expect light wind this morning, as a .04 (pdx-dls) westerly gradient can’t quite get the air molecule out of bed. By midday, we should have 12-15 or so from Stevenson to Mosier. By 4pm, expect 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Looking at the next couple of days, we’ll have marine clouds in Portland in the morning, but those clouds will burn off during the afternoon. Models suggest we’ll see the strongest wind early in the morning, followed by moderate westerlies in the afternoon. Given the big gradients and stable setup, I’m not sure I’m buying the midday die-off theory, but let’s see how tomorrow goes and change theories as needed.

Anyway, expect Dawn Patrol from Viento to Hood River on Tuesday morning at 23-26, holding through mid morning, and possible backing off to 20-23 in the afternoon while filling in from Stevenson to The Dalles. Or maybe it’ll just stay windy all day!

Wednesday starts off a bit stronger, with Dawn Patrol (see you there!) at 24-28 from Viento to Hood River, followed by 23-26 from late morning on through the evening. A trough of low pressure along the coast or just inland combines with the massive East Pacific High on Thursday and Friday for longer-lasting marine clouds in Portland. That sets us up for 26-30 early and 30-35 for the rest of the day, with the wind filling in all the way to Rufus.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s Monday, and it’s the start of a very busy week for me, complicated and made busier by the fact that it’s going to be a very windy week. Due to the forecast, I’ve had to completely block out my before-school time on Wednesday. I’ve also had to block out Friday, all day long. I’m using this as an excuse to not spend time reflecting and writing this morning. The truth of the matter is that I’m really just enjoying this beautiful morning. Rather than turning inward, I want to look at the view and enjoy the cool air flowing in through my windows. You go do the same – it’s an awesome morning. Make some space to enjoy it!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s freakin’ gorgeous out there this morning! Expect blue sky this morning and high clouds this afternoon with a few thunderheads over the Cascades this afternoon. Thundershowers are unlikely, but worth a mention. Temps will be in the low 60’s early (open windows and doors) and upper 80’s this afternoon (close windows and doors). Light wind early, moderate wind later. No rainbows. Tuesday looks sunny. Temps will be near 60 in the morning and near 90 in the afternoon. Moderate to strong wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks exactly like Tuesday, and the rest of the week looks similar, if maybe just a bit cooler.

Road and Mountain Biking

Yup. Trails are still there. Yup. Road is still there. If you want road biking, you might want to get it today, because we’re looking at nuking wind for the rest of the week. That said, it’s a very stable atmospheric setup, meaning the upper valleys won’t be all that windy in the mornings this week. You’ll still be able to get all spandexy with yourself somewhere at some time. One last-minute addition: Gunsight is NOT clear. Confirmed via Strava. NOT clear!

Upcoming Events

Today’s weekly, free events include: meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon, Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1, pickup kickball at Bingen’s Daubenspeck Park at 6, community yoga at Samadhi at 6, Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30, Pickup Basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, and YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45.

Looking ahead to July 4th weekend, there’s First Friday in Hood River, Ladies sailing night at Cascade locks Friday, Northwave’s open house Saturday, Pacific Hermitage’s garden party Saturday, the 6 hours of Mt. Hood mountain bike race at Skibowl Sunday, and a swap meet at Windance on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
