Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

First, my apologies if you are on my mailing list. I am having trouble with my email list server. The forecast will be available here until I sort that out.

The weather really isn’t cooperating with our desires for powder skiing. It’s Monday morning, and there’s a mix of rain and freezing rain on Mt. Hood. Today’s weather system seems to farther north than we would like; warm air aloft has rain-ish precipitation falling on the mountain. Seems like this will continue through Tuesday morning, although it’s possible we’ll see some wet snow mixed in for periods of time. The mountain will see about 3/4” rain and/or freezing rain by 4pm. Another 1/10” to 1/4” will fall tonight, possibly as snow, but more likely as rain/freezing rain. The snow level will be around 6000′ all day. Wind will be WNW 40 in the morning, W 30 in the afternoon, and WSW 30+ overnight.

We’ll still be in the warm air mass on Tuesday morning as a low pressure system moves inland into Washington. The snow level will crash in the afternoon, and then we’ll see heavy snowfall aided by strong west wind. The snow level Tuesday will be 6000′ in the morning, 1500′ around 4pm, and 500-1000′ overnight. An inch or so of rain/freezing rain/mixed precip will fall by 4pm. Another .8”+ water value falls overnight, for 8-12” of fluffy powder. Wind Tuesday will be WSW 40+ in the morning, W 45 in the afternoon, and WNW 40 after midnight.

Wednesday morning sees orographic snowfall with strong wind, but the sky will clear by midday as dry air moves in from the north. The snow level will be 1000′ in the morning and 0′ in the afternoon. About .2-.3” WV falls in the morning, for 2-4” of powder. Wind will be WNW 40 early, NNW 25 in the afternoon, and N 25 overnight. That wind will have an impact on snow quality.

Looking long-range, we’re headed into a cold and dry spell, although there’s a slight chance of some easterly orographic snowfall on Friday. Saturday looks frigid on Mt. Hood with very strong east wind. Sunday sees the temp climb back above freezing on the mountain.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m going to pass on writing a reflection this morning. Why? Because I can! Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Wind Forecast

for Monday, we’ll see gusty west wind that maxes out at 20-24 all day, steadiest near Multnomah Falls and Viento. Tuesday starts with light westerlies. As a weather system approaches in the afternoon, the wind will pick up to gusty 24-28 east of Hood River with rainy, gusty weather in the western Gorge. Wednesday sees that system move through while high pressure builds off the coast. We’ll start with 12-15 through the whole Gorge. By mid-morning, the wind will pick up to 24-28 from Stevenson to Arlington, fading to 10-13 or less east of The Dalles after 1pm. Looking at the weekend, we’ll see east wind at 60mph near Rooster Rock.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Post Canyon is currently closed to prevent trail damage. I had a report from yesterday that Syncline was good up to the fence. My best guess would be that upper trails have freeze-thaw mud, and will be subject to damage if you ride them. Same for Whoopdee. Buck Creek or Nestor Peak would be a good place to try for a ride. The gravel grinding, as always, is great, and so is the road biking.
