Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Monday morning and the forecast models are coming together a bit on us breaking out of this pattern and heading into a period of wet weather for the mountain. Notice I said “wet”. We are likely to see 10-18” of snow before the precip turns to rain, but if the GFS is right, things are going to get messy next weekend.

Until then… Monday will be sunny on Mt. Hood. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 13,000′. High temps will be near 50 at 5000′. Wind will be SW 15. Tuesday looks sunny early with some mid-level clouds in the afternoon and clear sky overnight. Teh FAF will be 11,000′ for much of the day. It’s possible (unlikely, but possible) that we’ll see a wee bit of drizzle. 5000′ temps will be in the upper 40’s early and low 40’s in the afternoon. Wind will be SW 10 early, WSW 15 in the afternoon, and NW 10 overnight.

Wednesday and Thursday look clear with the FAF above 11,000′. Wind for that period will be NW 10-15. Light precips starst up in the wee hours of Friday, becoming heavy snow (with orographic influence) overnight. The snow level will be 4000′, and the mountain will receive 10-18” of new snow by Saturday morning.

That snow will become increasingly dense, and then it will switch to rain by early Thursday afternoon. Very strong W/WNW wind will enhance the rainfall rate. For now, the GFS has Mt. Hood in the rain bullseye. The Euro takes the heaviest precip north of the Columbia. If the GFS is right, Mt. Hood will see somewhere around 4-7” of rain between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s Monday morning, and I have a very busy day. I’ll leave you to your thoughts. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

It’s still NUKING in the Gorge. For Monday, we’ll have east winds near Rooster Rock averaaging 60mph in the morning and 50mph in the afternoon. Stevenson will have 35-40 and Viento will be 25-30. Tuesday looks like 45mph in the morning near Rooster and 40mph in the afternoon. We’ll have 40-45mph again on Wednesday. Thursday starts with 45mph and drops to 25-30 in the afternoon. Just FYI, the wind chill at Rooster Rock this morning is 17 degrees.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I don’t even have to go outside to tell you that the Nothing is here. You can head up or west to escape it. For Monday, temps will be in the low 30’s all day. East wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks the same. Wednesday might actually see sunshine in the afternoon, but temps will still be near freezing early and in the mid 30’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Even though we have the Nothing, you’ll want to stay away from trails exposed to open air – they’ll still thaw, leaving your bike coated in mud and your tracks damaging the trails. To make up for it, you can head to Kickstand Coffee tonight to participate in an HRATS fundraiser, or you can go to another fundraiser on the 14th at Double Mountain. If you decide to road ride or gravel grind, watch out for icy areas in the fog zone. Speaking of mixed surfaces, the Cold Lap is at 3pm at Dirty Fingers every Saturday.
