Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Thursday’s forecast looks really tricky. The incoming weather system (the one that’s going to cause all the mess for the Thursday morning commute in Portland and Vancouver) is warm, with 5000′ temps of 2-4 degrees Celsius. The current model run suggests we’ll see snow switch to rain on Mt. Hood by 1pm, but that could change depending on the storm track and depth of the cold pool. The models suggest a switch back to snow by 1am Friday. In the 4am Thursday to 4am Friday time period, we’re going to see about 2” of water value. At this point, I have no idea how much of that will fall as snow, freezing rain, or rain, but it’s almost certain to be a mix of those three. Stay tuned.

Looking at the long-range forecast, models currently suggest at least a couple feet of snow over the weekend.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Expect light westerlies at 5-10 all day today. Tuesday starts with E 5-10 and picks up to E 20-25 in the afternoon with easterlies increasing overnight. Wednesday starts with E 40 and picks up to E 60. Thursday looks like E 60 all day with dumping snow. It’s unclear when we’ll see a return to west wind (and warmer weather). Maybe not until Friday midday…

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s pretty incredible how our mental lives can be dominated by one event to the exclusion of all others. For example, I’m obsessed with Thursday’s storm, and it’s still three days away! I’m not sure why we humans get so hyperfocused on a single threatening or painful thing, but we do. Our unhappiness about one aspect of life (be it small or large) can fill up our entire awareness.

When we notice this happening, it’s important to take a step back and notice that there are other things happening in life. If that’s impossible, one thing to do is … do something. If you’re obsessively focusing on one thing, put your attention on something that’s far away from the object of rumination.

For example, I’m obsessing about the snow and ice storm, so I’m going to spend some time in my garden today. No, it doesn’t make much sense to be gardening this time of year, but it’ll take my mind off the fact that this storm is going to throw a huge monkey wrench into my school plans, my work with my clients, and my commute to Portland.

Life is a lot bigger than any one of our worries. Try and keep this in mind when one aspect of your world takes over your mental life. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Looks like we got lucky this morning – it’s above freezing at river level. With west wind in the forecast through this afternoon, it looks unlikely we’ll see snow at river level. Up in the valleys, well, that’s a different story. Down here, we’ll see showers and rain through this afternoon with sprinkles overnight. Temps will be in the mid to upper 30’s all day. Light west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks partly cloudy with flurries in the morning followed by some Nothing for the rest of the day. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the mid 30’s (maybe) in the afternoon. Increasing east wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks dry in the morning with snow after midnight. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and the upper 20’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks very snowy with 5-8” of snow followed by a switch to freezing rain. Fun!

Road and Mountain Biking

It is, of course, still too wet to ride Post, Hospital or Whoopdee. Syncline is a maybe. It’s time to start thinking about freeze-thaw conditions. Once we dip below freezing, you should stop riding the trails if the temperature is above freezing. Feel free to ride where the trails stay frozen, but freeze-thaw conditions make the trails delicate and susceptible to damage.

Upcoming Events

It’s Monday, and there’s meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. That’s followed by Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm. There’s a walking happiness group that leaves One Community Health in The Dalles at 5pm, there’s Kickball at Daubenspeck Park at 6, free yoga at Samadhi at 6, Pickup Basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, free Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell and at the Parkdale Community Center, and YogaFaith (Christ-centered yoga) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles.

Have an awesome day today!
