Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!

Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

Monday is starting off with a mix of partly cloudy sky and snow flurries on Mt. Hood. That will continue through noon or so, after which the snowfall rate (and the wind) will pick up. The snow level will be at the surface in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and back down to the surface (in the Gorge, anyway) after midnight. The mountain will pick up .2” water value (WV) by 4pm, for 2-3” of new snow. Another .6-.7” WV falls tonight, for 6-8” of powder. Wind today will be W 20 in the morning, picking up to W 35 in the afternoon and WNW 40 after midnight.

Tuesday looks snowy and windy. Given the strength of the wind, we may receive significantly more snowfall than I’m forecasting, but I’m going to be conservative. The snow level Tuesday will be near the surface in the morning and 1000′ in the afternoon and evening. We’ll see .3” WV between 4am and 4pm for 3-4” of powder. Another .4” falls overnight, for 4-5” of powder. Wind on Tuesday will be WNW 40 in the morning, W 30 in the afternoon, and W 45 after midnight.

Wednesday also looks windy and snowy, although models are predicting less snow than on Tuesday. Again, we may pick up more snow than models predict, as they tend to underestimate snowfall associated with NW orographic effects. The snow level Wednesday will be 1000′ in the morning, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ after midnight. Models suggest we’ll see just .2” WV during the day, for 2-3” of powder, followed by another inch or so overnight.

Thursday looks like another windy and snowy day. Friday is starting to look quite interesting, with both the GFS and the Euro predicting very heavy snowfall along with a relatively low snow level. Both models bring in quite a bit of additional snow Saturday and Sunday with very low snow levels.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light west wind this morning picks up to W 10-13 this afternoon through the whole Gorge. Tuesday starts with W 16-19 everywhere and drops to W 12-15 in the afternoon. Wednesday looks like 20-23 near Cascade Locks and east of The Dalles with W 7-11 in the central Gorge early. The wind picks up to W 24-28 east of The Dalles in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

As modern humans, we need to learn to manage our stress levels. However, it can be quite difficult to notice when our stress load is building, especially when it builds slowly. Rather than attempting to watch our stress levels, we can watch our actions. What do I mean by this?

Most of us have things we do when our stress level is increasing. For example, I tend to listen to music, turn on OPB, or rush around trying to get things done. Other people may drink more, smoke weed, exercise more or less, eat more or less, etc. When I see myself doing these things, I know I need to take a look at my stress level and do something to address it.

What are your stress-level red flags? What are the things you do to unconsciously manage stress? If you can notice that you’re taking these steps, you can also take conscious steps to self-soothe. By being aware of what’s happening, you’re more likely to be able to address your stress in an intentional way, a way that’s most likely to have an impact. And always remember, no matter your stress level right now, you’ll come out the other side. You’ll survive. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

The weather is being quite tricky right now, with temps hovering just below freezing in the Gorge under cloudy sky. It’s possible we’ll see a few scattered snowflakes this morning before rain this afternoon. It’s also possible we’ll see an inch of snow down to river level tonight. Temps will be in the low 30’s this morning and upper 30’s this afternoon. Light west wind. 89% chance of rainbows.

Tuesday will probably start off with some pre-dawn wet snow with scattered sprinkles under partly cloudy sky during the day. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and the low 40’s this afternoon. West wind. 89% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks partly cloudy and sprinkly. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 40’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 89% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Your trainer bike will be happy to see you today. And so will your XC skis. I tried to go jogging in Post yesterday, but that didn’t work so well – there’s still a foot of snow there. I heard that Syncline is one big waterfall and stream, so please don’t mountain bike there or you’ll really do a lot of trail damage. There should be plenty of good road biking today. Go try that!

Upcoming Events

It’s Monday, and there’s meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. There’s a walking happiness group that leaves One Community Health in The Dalles at 5pm, there’s Kickball at Daubenspeck Park at 6, free yoga at Samadhi at 6, Pickup Basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, free Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell and at the Parkdale Community Center, and YogaFaith (Christ-centered yoga) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles. Coming up Thursday at Skibowl, there’s a ski mountaineering race in the evening, the first in a series of such races.

Have an awesome day today!
