Gorge Wind Forecast

If you’re in the Gorge and you’ve looked out your window this morning, you’ll have noticed that it’s not windy. Just a light westerly breeze is tickling the leaves on the most sensitive trees. In an interesting twist, the GFS is actually predicting east wind at 10-15 today, leaving this forecast based on local’s knowledge, rather than models. With strong high pressure offshore and lower pressure along the coast and in the desert, synoptic-scale gradients are still present. I don’t think they’ll be enough to really help us out today. We’ll have light west wind at 3-8 for much of the day with just a slight chance of some 10-13 late in the afternoon or early evening.

Tuesday starts out with light westerlies at 5-10 from Cascade Locks to Swell. The westerlies will stay in that range for much of the day. Late in the afternoon, a low pressure system will start to move towards Vancouver Island. That will amp up the gradients enough for gusty west wind at 13-16 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. The wind will start up earliest, and be steadiest, at Stevenson.

That low pressure system will increase marine cloud coverage west of the Cascades on Wednesday morning, dropping high temps a few degrees and increasing gradients. We’ll start Wednesday with dawn patrol at 21-24 from Viento to Hood River and 12-15 near Cascade Locks. By midday, the wind will pick up to rangey 22-27 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. Given the setup, there’s going to be some inconsistency to the wind; it’s likely, for example, that the Wunderbar and Hood River will have stronger wind than Swell in the afternoon.

Thursday’s a bit far out for precision and accuracy, but the GFS currently suggests plenty of wind: dawn patrol at 21-24 from Viento to Hood River with 24-27 in the afternoon from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. As of right now, the long-range and semi-reliable forecast is calling for wind all the way through next Monday. This is a good thing, as I’ll be on retreat and unable to forecast from 7/29-8/2.

Random Morning Thoughts

I got into a bit of an argument with my therapist a few weeks ago. “Stop pointing out all the shit that’s wrong with me,” I snapped at him. “I’m good enough at doing that myself.”

We are good at that, aren’t we? We’re not so good at pointing out the shit that’s right with us.

I’ve made a bit of a resolution in light of that conversation. You can give it a shot too, if you like. Each time I say something negative to myself, I also have to say something positive to myself. That’s just to remind me that I’m a decent human being. You too are a decent human being with a lot to like, even if you don’t feel like that right now. You’re probably athletic. Maybe you’re funny. Ambitious. Determined. A good parent. A compassionate friend. Generous. Kind.

So, next time you find yourself beating up on yourself, give yourself a pat on the back to balance it out. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s another sunny day with a touch of humidity. We’ll see temps near 60 this morning and 90 this afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. There’s a good chance of a colorful sunset tonight. Tuesday looks almost exactly like today. Wednesday looks a bit cooler and less muggy. Temps will be near 60 early and in the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong west wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

I saw a photo from Plains of Abraham yesterday, and the wildflowers are ridiculous up there right now. That ride is always amazing, so go get it! Other than that, still no word on the closure of Hospital Hill and Whoopdee and other SDS lands. So, keep riding for now. When those “fire closure” signs appear, obey them!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include meditation at noon at Trinity Natural Medicine and also at 7 at Bethel Congregational in White Salmon. The Gorge sailing team will take you for a ride on a sailboat between 6 and 7:30 at the Hood River Marina, and there’s pickup Kickball at Daubenspeck Park at 6. If you want yoga, there are three by-donation classes: 6 at Samadhi, 6:30 at the Mt. Hood Town Hall, and 6:45 at Pure Yoga in The Dalles.

Tomorrow’s heat has inspired a new event: The Klickbait, a group float down the Klickitat. Give dirty Fingers bike shop a call for details. Other highlights this week include the Hood River County Fair (Wednesday through Saturday), the Delta Aquarids meteor shower Friday and Saturday, and the Dare to Live Music Fest at the Hood River Marina Saturday.

As I’ve mentioned previously, I’ll be out of town and internet-free, leaving you forecast-bereft, from 7/29-9/2. Here’s the link to the full events calendar.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
