Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

When I woke up this morning, it neither looked windy nor felt windy nor appeared that it would ever be windy again (high overcast sky has that feel for me). But don’t despair: it’s windy already, and models show it will get windier as the day goes on and the low pressure sending these clouds up from California stops doing so. The 7am gradients looked promising: .13 (pdx-dls), .05 (dls-psc) and .51 (eph-dls). The 7am windspeeds looked good too: upper teens to low twenties everywhere but Steven’s Locks.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

That said, these high clouds and the atmospheric instability they indicate will cause the wind to fluctuate quite a bit this morning. As this “stuff” clears out later today, we’ll see the wind pick up. Expect this morning to be gusty, with the wind varying from the teens to the low twenties. As the sky starts to clear (hopefully this really happens), we’ll see the wind pick up to gusty 25-29 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles. Beaches further east will max out at 15-18 today.

Tomorrow looks like a better, more stable, more predictable setup as high pressure sits in the eastern Pacific and a trough sits along the coast. Expect 21-24 from Viento to Mosier, possibly to Doug’s, first thing in the morning with 13-16 further east and light wind at Cascade Locks. By mid-morning, we’ll see the wind pick up to 25-29 from Viento to Rufus. Arlington should max out in the low twenties tomorrow, and same goes for Steven’s Locks.

We’ll see a deeper marine layer on Wednesday with 15-18 to start the day, strongest near HR. Wednesday should be the windiest day of the week, maxing out at 27-31 or more. Why will it be windiest? Because I have a midday appointment in Portland, of course!

Coast (north/central/south). Today: 10-15/15-20/5-10, NW swell 3′ @ 7 seconds. Tomorrow: 10-15/15-20/30-35, NW 3 @ 7. Wednesday: 5-10/15-20/30-35, NW 3 @ 7.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 22-25. Jones tomorrow, 20-25. Jones Wednesday, 20-23. Sauvie’s today, 8-11. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 8-11. Sauvie’s Wednesday, 5-8.

Random Morning Thoughts

We humans have a funny tendency to create stories about the actions of others. I got a cat recently, and I’ve noticed myself doing this with her; the tendency seems especially strong because she can’t tell me why she’s doing the things she’s doing. If I want to meet her needs, I have to guess.

Sometimes this results in me thinking my cat dislikes me. She’ll sleep in a different room, or sleep on the opposite side of the bed, or refuse to sit on my lap or on my shoulder. But then again, she’s almost always within five feet of me.

Because I like touch and like to touch the people I care about, I assume my cat doesn’t like me when she is near, but not touching. That is likely an incorrect assumption. But it’s a good window into how I interpret the actions of others.

As I said before, we all create stories. Those are our stories crafted in our own minds, not the truth of the other being’s reality. The only way to know the truth is to ask. And while we may not be able to do that with our pets, we can do it with our humans. If you notice yourself crafting stories about the actions of others (pets or two-legged creatures), especially if those stories make you feel icky, stop! Ask the other person what’s really going on. They’ll appreciate your attempt to connect and understand.

And if they don’t, that’s their noise, not yours. You can choose to make an additional effort to understand. Or not. But watch out for the stories you create, because they’ll likely just bring you suffering. Practice on your pets and take what you learn into the bigger world. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s gray outside my window this morning. It’s a fine day, really. A great day to open windows and let the air in before the temp warms up. Expect low 70’s and muggy conditions this morning with lots of clouds. Those clouds are forecast to clear this afternoon for mostly sunny sky with temps in the upper 80’s and moderate to strong wind. I’m not sure I’m buying any of that, but it’s the forecast.

Tomorrow looks sunny with temps in the low 60’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. Wednesday looks mostly sunny with low clouds in the western Gorge. Temps will be in the low 60’s in the morning and the low 80’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows for the three day period.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s gray and shady and warm and muggy out there this morning, and that means it’s a good morning for a ride. Get it before the gray goes away, because the bluer the sky becomes, the windier it shall be.

Royal Anne Organics: U-Pick Dahlias & Seed garlic

Sometimes you just need a big bunch of flowers. Maybe you need some cheer. Maybe a friend needs some cheer. Head to Hood River U-Pick off Markham Road (4320 Royal Anne Drive) and pick your own big bouquet of flowers. While you’re there, check out the certified organic seed garlic at the same location. Garlic is easy to grow, it’s fun to harvest, and even your black thumb can’t kill it. Haven’t gardened before? Garlic is a great first plant. Get some now and give it a shot!

Upcoming Events

Today’s free events include Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm and yoga at the town Hall at 6:30. If you want to go for a ride on a sailboat, show up at the docks behind the Hood River DMV at 6, and the Gorge Junior Sailing Team will hood you up.

Coming up later this week, the Hood River County Recreation Trails Committee meets on Wednesday at 5pm at the OSU extension office. On Thursday night from 5-8, Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair and bike washing party behind Cascade Eye Center in Hood River. If you’ve got a used bike to donate, you can drop it off there too.

We’ve got sailboat races Friday through Sunday in Cascade Locks, and on Saturday night in Hood River, the movie Surf’s Up snows at Jackson Park at dusk. Coming up next Friday, the 14th, the Princess Bride plays at Cascade Locks Movies in the Park.

Have an awesome day today!
