Monday. Enjoy 90 for a few more days. It’ll be gone by the weekend.

There’s just enough breeze out there this morning to ripple the water and get a few intrepid folks on the water with big gear. We’ll see steadily increasing wind today as strong offshore high pressure combines with low pressure in the desert and a wimpy little weather system passing way to our north. As always, the passing of a weather system, even a wimpy one, can f**k with the wind quality and forecast reliability, so take this with a grain of salt today. If you got a lot of exercise yesterday, you can take the forecast with extra grains of salt to replenish your body’s stores. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Our 7am gradients were .07 (pdx-dls), .00 (dls-psc) and .39 (eph-dls). We’ll see westerlies at 10-13 from Viento to Mosier this morning, picking up to 16-19 from Stevenson to Doug’s midday with 22-25 mid afternoon, possibly with a couple steady hours everywhere from Steven’s Locks to Maryhill. If the wimpy weather system has its way, we’ll see the wind back off to gusty 16-19 everywhere but Stevenson and Avery. Models also say Roosevelt will join with 13-16 late today.

Tomorrow starts off with 17-20 from Viento to Mosier, holds through mid-afternoon, and then picks up to 22-25 from Rowena to Rufus with 13-16 from Stevenson to Bingen and 13-16 east of John Day Dam.

Wednesday starts with 10-13 and picks up to 15-18. Thursday also brings moderate westerlies. Looks like The Big Cooldown will happen on Friday, but as of right now, it will arrive with only weak high pressure off the coast, and thus won’t be as nuking as it could possibly be. Sitting here on Monday looking at the weekend (which I’m only doing for KB4C participants), it does look windy all three days.

Random Morning Thoughts

Mother Nature tossed a lot of beauty and awe my way yesterday. First, there were the birds lined up on a telephone wire. As still as cats watching birds, they clung to the wire, spaced like Chanukah candles. All at once, they dropped and flew in a pack. I don’t know how they communicate silently like that, but it’s amazing. Next, there was a narrow, sharply defined contrail glowing pink in the darkening sky. Then there were the meteors. The next meteor shower isn’t until the end of the month, but that didn’t stop three from shooting across the sky in my view last night.

You can predict a meteor shower, but you can’t predict individual meteors. And you have no chance of seeing them if you don’t take time to lie on your back and look at the stars. Likewise, you’re not going to stumble across a new passion, an amazing insight, new friends, or awe and wonder if you don’t shake up your routine.

Try new things. Go new places. Step outside your comfort zone. And spend time lying on your back looking at the stars (literally or figuratively). Magic happens at the edge of your comfort zone. Stretch it, make it bigger and more flexible, and more magic will happen.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Oh my goodness. It’s going to be hot and sunny today! Temps will be in the low 70’s early and the mid 90’s this afternoon. Wind will increase in the afternoon, and there will be no rainbows unless you craft them out of cookie dough. Tomorrow looks, yes, hot and sunny with temps in the upper 60’s early and the mid 90’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows. Coming up Wednesday, we’ll have more hot and sunny weather, and the same on Thursday, but models swear we’ll see a cooldown Thursday night into Friday.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s still dry out there, which means this is the summer to learn how to ride dry dirt. Have you ever gone surfing through deep, dusty corners? No? Get yourself some Continental Trail Kings and give it a shot! Out on the road today, it’ll be hot. However, the views will still be lovely, so you can’t go wrong with a road ride either.

Upcoming Events

If you want to get on the water tonight, head down to the Hood River Marina docks right behind the DMV, and members of the Gorge Sailing Team will take you out for a ride on a sailboat from 6-7:30. Bring the family. It’s free, but they’ll accept donations to support the team. Also today, there’s Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm, community yoga at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, and community yoga at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30. There’s another community yoga class tomorrow morning at 8am.

Looking ahead to next weekend, Cascade Locks hosts the WIND youth regatta on Saturday and Sunday. Kiteboarding for Cancer is happening at Hood River’s Event Site next Friday through Sunday. KB4C is the one event that ALWAYS gets wind, so you’ll want to be here next weekend. They are looking for volunteers. You’ll need to sign up by Wednesday at KB4C.

On Saturday, the 44 Road Trails Association has a party to celebrate the 44 Road trails. They’ll have food and drinks, live music and free demo bikes courtesy of Hood River Bicycles. Next Saturday is also the Oregon Endurance mountain bike race on those same trails, with folks riding either 45 miles or 80 miles.

Have an awesome day today!
