Hi Monday. Hi upper level low.

DSC_7641-Edit
It’s Monday morning, and there are just ripples on the Columbia. Ripples and happy fishing boats, chasing after yesterday’s 11146 Chinook and 1590 Steelhead. Our ripply river belies an underlying .07 (pdx-dls) gradient, enough for some wind later today. Before we get into that, let’s talk about the bigger weather picture. An offshore low has taken up residence near Vancouver Island, and that low will impact the wind for this entire week. As a result, the forecast isn’t going to be super spot-on, and the wind on the river will be on the gusty/unreliable end of the spectrum. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

For today, Monday, you can expect light and variable wind for the first couple hours. As the days warms up a little, we’ll see the wind climb to 13-16 from Viento to Mosier by noon. This afternoon looks like gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to Rufus. Stevenson, Mosier and Avery will likely be the steadiest, strongest locations today, with other locations suffering from the overall setup.

Tuesday’s weather picture gets even more complicated, with an offshore low, an afternoon wave crossing the state, and a slight chance of Cascade convection. We should start the day with 12-15 east of Hood River and light wind in the western Gorge. The afternoon looks like 17-20 at Steven’s Locks with gusty 23-26 from Viento to Rufus.

Wednesday will likely start off with lots of clouds, and that will shift the wind eastward a bit. We’re currently looking at a light wind starts, probably 5-10mph or so. In the afternoon, models predict 20-23 from Mosier to Arlington. This difficult-to-predict setup continues through Friday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I had brunch with a dear friend a few weeks ago, and halfway through our meal, he got this sheepish look on his face. “What’s up,” I asked him. “Well,” he said, “I did this thing, and I’m upset, and I’m embarrassed…”

We talked for a while, and it turned out that this “thing” was pretty common, my friend’s reactions were pretty common and that my friend had been suffering a lot of shame around it because he didn’t know anyone else who’d experienced this.

We’re often so quiet in our struggles. We think we’re the only person who’s experienced this “thing”, whatever it is, and we’re silenced by our shame around it. We don’t reach out when we need it most. It turns out that most life experiences are pretty common. Most people who make good friends (listen well, stick around, behave authentically, don’t judge) are going to listen compassionately when you need it.

By speaking up and being vulnerable, we create the conditions for other people to do the same. Think about this… what’s the worst thing that happens if you make yourself vulnerable, and what, really, are the long-term consequences of that worst-case scenario. In the grand scheme of things, it’s probably not all that bad, eh?

If you’re suffering from something that’s happened (or something that didn’t happen) reach out. People are there for you, and they’re able to lessen your suffering by listening. And you, reader, be a good listener. Hush up. Don’t judge. Don’t offer advice unless explicitly asked for it. Be empathetic. Have an awesome day.
