Happy Thanksgiving!

DSCF9531
We can start off today with three announcements. First, T-Line is running Bruno and Pucci. Meadows will have Daisy, B-Cup, Easy and some Nordic Friday through Sunday. Skibowl is opening their tubing hill Friday through Sunday with Cosmic Tubing Friday and Saturday night. It looks like temps will be in the upper 20’s this weekend at T-Line and Meadows, for lovely weather for the start to ski season.

If that’s not enough detail, and I suspect it isn’t… Today will be clear and sunny on Mt. Hood with the free air freezing level (FAF) at the surface. Temps at 5000′ will be in the upper 20’s by this afternoon. The wind will be pretty wicked: E 30 all day long. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow looks similar, with the FAF at the surface early and at 500′ in the afternoon. Temps at 5000′ will be in the upper 20’s all day long. The wind will be E 25 early and NE 25 in the afternoon. Saturday looks about the same: the FAF will be at the surface early and at 1000′ or so in the afternoon. Temps at 5000′ will be right around 32 degrees all day long with NE wind at 25-30.

Sunday looks different. It will still be sunny, but temps between 4000′ and 6000′ will rise to a few degrees above freezing in the morning. In the afternoon, the FAF will drop to 4500′. Wind will be NE 15 early and light and variable in the afternoon.

The models, as of yesterday, were being consistent in breaking down this high pressure system during the middle of next week. This morning, however, the GFS has taken a new direction. It’s now calling for a weather system Monday morning (snow level of 5000-6000′) and another, much wetter, system on Tuesday (snow level of 6500′). The Euro is not on board with this prediction. In other words, there’s no predicting what may happen after Sunday – we’ll just have to see how things shake out. It is worth noting that the models do tend to be overly optimistic in time frames for breaking down high pressure systems, so the GFS will likely back off this solution as we get closer to Monday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s blowing 40mph at Rooster Rock this morning with 38 degree air temp (13 degrees warmer than Hood River – wow!). That works out to a wind chill reading of 24. You can expect increasing easterlies today for afternoon Rooster wind at 40-50. Steven’s Locks will get into the 30’s (windspeed, and hopefully temps too) today. Tomorrow sees Rooster at 40-50 early and 30-40 in the afternoon. Saturday looks like 30mph or so all day.

For those of you wanting to watch the wind speeds at Stevenson, you can check the town’s weather station.

Random Morning Thoughts

Today is Thanksgiving, in case you hadn’t noticed. Different people celebrate this holiday in different ways. Some people eat turkey, some eat Tofurkey, some eat ham or carnitas or homemade marshmallows. Some people don’t celebrate this holiday at all. Some people use it to educate others on what the white settlers really did when they came to this land. There are countless ways to celebrate Thanksgiving, but there’s one that can appeal to all cultures and value systems: giving thanks. Gratitude.

There’s something in your life for which your grateful. Maybe it’s that turkey in the oven. Maybe it’s the loved ones with whom you’ll celebrate today. Maybe it’s the fact that there’s skiing and snowboarding to be had tomorrow. Perhaps you’re grateful for the fact that you have heat in your house and aren’t living in your car or on the street. It could be that your gratitude is higher up the Maslow chart: you’re grateful for blue sky, sunshine, big trees, and frozen waterfalls. Perhaps you love looking at our volcanoes, Wy’East and Klickitat. They’re amazing, aren’t they? Maybe you’re just grateful to be alive and taking in all these incredible things!

The holidays can be tough for many people. Saying, “Be grateful,” dismisses that experience on some level. I want to acknowledge that. If you are having a rough day today, I’m thinking about you. I’m hoping that everyone who’s reading this can both be grateful for everything that’s beautiful in the world and also be open to holding a little mental space for those who are not so fortunate. I wish you a beautiful Thanksgiving on some level, even if it is not beautiful on all levels. Have an awesome day today, and happy Thanksgiving!

Gorge Weather Forecast

If you like clear and cold, you’ve got what you like. It was 27 when I got up this morning, and it was down to 25 as I was writing this. The NOAA says we’ll see a high near 40 today. That would be both impressive and nice. East wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow starts off right around 20 degrees and finishes up in the upper 30’s. East wind. No rainbows. Saturday looks just like Friday. So does Sunday.

Looking ahead to Monday, we have the battle of the weather models. As of yesterday, they both said no precip until Tuesday, at the earliest. As of this morning, the GFS is calling for freezing rain starting at 7am Monday. The Euro is not. Models tend to break down these high pressure systems too quickly, so hopefully the GFS has just had a little too much eggnog too early in the morning. However, let’s keep a close eye on this, shall we?

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s so cold this morning that I’m pretty certain all the trails are frozen hard. That’s great for now. However, we’ll likely see freeze-thaw conditions this afternoon in all the sun-exposed areas. Please don’t ride Whoopdee or the Kleeway. Syncline will likely be the same, although it does dry out faster. So… perhaps someone would like to give me a Syncline report! In road biking news, you are warmer-blooded than I if you’re out riding in this chilliness. May I suggest Barmitts to keep your hands warm?
