Happy 4th of July! Have a safe, sane and serene holiday!

DSC_3985
It’s another warm and windy day here in the Gorge, and it’s looking like today is the windiest day of the next three. If you like your windsports, get on the water and find some. There are a couple of demos happening today: there’s the Naish Bash at the Sandbar, for groms only today according to their FB page. Trainer kites will be available for you to use. The Naish Bash continues tomorrow with free demos. There’s another Ezzy demo today, but the time and location has not yet been determined. You may be able to get that information from Windance. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

If you are planning to get on the water today, you can expect 17-20 this morning from Viento to Mosier with 12-15 at Steven’s Locks and variable conditions east of The Dalles. As a trough of low pressure approaches BC during the morning, our gradients will either slacken or stay steady. Given that, we’ll see continued 17-20 through midday from Stevenson to Mosier. Models do show an afternoon bump to 21-24, maybe just a touch more. I suspect that will be limited to Stevenson, given the troughiness in BC, but maybe, just maybe, we’ll see it all the way from Steven’s Locks to Maryhill. Speaking of Maryhill, expect 15-18 out there this afternoon.

Jones and Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 15-18. Jones tomorrow, 10-13. Jones Monday, 20-23. Sauvie’s today, 9-12. Sauvie’s tomorrow, light. Sauvie’s Monday, light.

Random Morning Thoughts

Happy Independence Day, everyone! A friend of mine in White Salmon is calling his party today the “Interdependence Day” party. I like that. See, we stress independence a lot here in America, and that’s not always a good thing. Nor is it true that we are isolated individuals. We like to believe we’re independent from other countries and from other people, especially people whose lives don’t look like ours. We blame people for being in a situation unlike ours, and we tell them they should “man up” and “pull themselves up by their bootstraps”.

I’ve got news: we’re all interconnected. The dude on the off ramp, he’s connected to you (so give him some food). The gal on welfare, she’s connected to you. So are the people who picked the fruit you’re eating, who bagged your groceries, changed your oil, and fixed that mess when someone stole your identity. And guess what? The identity thief is connected to you too.

When we proclaim our independence from each other, we give ourselves excuses to blame, shame and ignore others. We are all connected. One species. One planet. We are all one. Be kind to others and make an attempt to understand, rather than isolate. Happy Interdependence Day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s another ORizona/WAlifornia morning here in the Gorge with clear sky and temps in the low 70’s. We’ll see 95 again this afternoon, because 95 is the new 75 in these here parts. Moderate wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow starts off near 70 and, yes, you got it, maxes out in the upper 90’s. No wind. No rainbows. Monday, well, you’re not going to believe this: sunny, low in the upper 60’s, high in the mid-90’s. Light wind, and yep: no rainbows. It might just cool off at the end of next week.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m just gonna keep reminding you all weekend: it’s dry as a bone out there, and we are at IFPL 3. No moto riding. In addition, Kreps and SDS lands closed for the summer this morning due to fire danger, so no more riding Whoopdee or Hospital Hill until further notice. In addition, the Gifford Pinchot is now at IFPL 2, so no moto riding there. If you are driving on forestland, you’ll need to carry a gallon of water and a shovel or a 2.5lb fire extinguisher and a shovel.

The demo continues tomorrow with free kite demos and strapless instruction.

There’s a trail run at 8 in Post Canyon, a women’s bike ride leaving mountain view at 9, White Salmon’s independence day party starting at 1 with lots of kids’ games, and Pacific Hermitage’s Interdependence Day garden party, also starting at 1. Tomorrow evening at 6:30 at Yoga Samadhi, there will be a baker’s dozen monks, including some senior monks from Thailand. If you like to be in the presence of serenity, that’s the place to be tomorrow evening.

There’s an all-sports swap at Windance tomorrow with Anson’s Bike Buddies hossting a bike swap and bike donation drive – drop off your old bike, even if it’s not quite working, for a tax writeoff, and Anson’s will fix it up and give it to a local kid.
