Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!

Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

It’s mostly cloudy on Mt. Hood this morning and will stay that way all day. A few flurries move in during the afternoon. The snow level will be at the surface early and at 500-1000′ later in the day. We’ll see maybe an inch of snow this afternoon into the evening. Wind will be W 10 during the day and SW 15 in the afternoon and evening.

Saturday looks clear, cold, dry and sunny all day. Clouds move in after sunset. The free air freezing level will be at the surface in the morning and around 1500′ in the afternoon, falling to 500′ overnight. Wind on Saturday will be light and variable in the morning and W 20 in the afternoon and evening.

Sunday morning starts off cloudy. Snow starts up by 7am or so. The snow level will be 500′ or less to start the day, 1500′ in the afternoon, and down near sea level after midnight. The mountain will see about .5” water value (WV) between 4am and 4pm Sunday, for 5-6” of dry powder. Another .3” WV falls overnight, for another 3-4” of powder. Wind on Sunday will be W 25 in the morning, W 15 in the afternoon, and NW 20 after midnight.

Monday currently looks like one of those orographic snowfall sort of days. The snow level will be near the surface early, rising to 1500′ in the afternoon. The mountain will receive around .3” WV during the day, for 3-4” of powder, followed by another .3” WV overnight, for another 3-4” of new snow. Wind will be NW 20 in the morning and WNW 30 in the afternoon and evening.

Random Morning Thoughts

Late yesterday, the president issued an order rescinding the right of transgender students to use the bathroom the corresponds with their gender identity. This is an attack on vulnerable youth who are already experiencing bullying, pressure from parents, discrimination by society, and a 41% suicide attempt rate. Yes, 41% of trans youth attempt suicide.

Arguments against allowing people to use the bathroom aligned with gender ID don’t make sense. First, people city privacy concerns for cis-gender (birth sex and gender ID match) people. A trans person headed into a bathroom is not going in to gape – they are going in to take a pee or a poo. Rather than seeking access to the private bathroom moments of others, trans people are generally just hoping they won’t be harassed while trying to do a biological function.

Another argument ties sexual orientation to gender identity, implying that trans folks are somehow conflating peeing and sex. Gender identity (what sex you are) is completely separate from sexual orientation (who you’re attracted to). Just as there are gay cis-men and straight cis-men, there are gay trans men and straight trans men (and pansexual, demi-sexual, asexual, graysexual, etc.)

In other words, you can’t tell who turns someone on by looking at them. By this argument, you’d want gay men using the women’s bathroom and lesbians using the men’s bathroom. It just doesn’t make sense.

As for the argument for the discomfort of the bathroom users, that falls on the users of the bathroom to sort out. A trans person just wants to pee, not interact with you. If you’re having feelings around someone who looks different than you using your bathroom, you may want to explore those feelings and what’s causing them to arise. You’re awesome enough to tackle that task. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly cloudy out there this morning and will stay that way today, with just a chance of some sprinkles (or flurries if you’re above 500′). Temps will be right at freezing early and near 40 in the afternoon. Light east wind. 2% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks dry and clear. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and near 40 in the afternoon. Clouds move in Saturday night and snow starts around 6am Sunday. Luckily (or not, depending on your perspective), temps will be right around 30 early and near 40 in the afternoon. So, we’ll see an inch or two of snow followed by rain, possibly followed by a little more snow Sunday night. Light west wind. 98% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Your trainer bike will be happy to see you today. And so will your XC skis. I tried to go jogging in Post yesterday, but that didn’t work so well – there’s still a foot of snow there. I heard that Syncline is one big waterfall and stream, so please don’t mountain bike there or you’ll really do a lot of trail damage. There should be plenty of good road biking today. Go try that!

Upcoming Events

As always on Friday morning, you can go to Kickstand Coffee, jog 4.1 miles, and receive a free cup of coffee and a donut for your efforts. Maybe I will take next Friday off from writing the forecast and do that instead, because I do love coffee and donuts.

Have an awesome day today!
