Friday. TGIF, TGI holiday weekend!

BigRainbow
It’s quite cloudy in Hood River this morning, and the gradients on the river are just moderate – .07 (pdx-dls) and .06 (dls-psc). Despite this, we’re seeing wind in the mid 30’s at Arlington. Driving for that may be a mistake unless you take a good book to wait until the afternoon session. Models say we’ll see 13-16 under the clouds this morning with perhaps gusty 16-19 under the clouds later, but I wouldn’t count on that. More reliable wind will be found out in the sunshine, probably from Lyle eastward. Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Given that we have a 1031mb high off the coast and low pressure inland (not a heat low like we’d prefer, but low pressure nonetheless), we will see a windy day. It won’t be as windy as yesterday at The Wall and Avery, but that’s probably just fine with many of you! Look for the wind to build to 25-29, perhaps even 28-32, from Lyle to Arlington by late morning or early afternoon. The strongest wind today will be from Rowena to Rufus. River temp is 58 degrees, and flow is 225kcfs at The Dalles. That flow level yesterday was perfect at The Wall, so keep that in mind. If you care, 1606 spring chinook made it past Bonneville yesterday.

Looking at tomorrow, we’ll have low pressure systems all over the place and a weak frontal system moving through. As of this morning, it’s looking like Saturday will start off with west 13-16 pretty much everywhere, drop to 5-10 midday, and pick back up to 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon.

Sunday looks windier, especially in the afternoon, as a weak weather system moves through and is quickly followed by building high pressure offshore. Timing, of course, will impact the actual wind on the river. That said, it looks like Sunday will start off with 13-16 and build to 26-30, with the strongest wind from Mosier to Arlington late in the afternoon. Since it’s a holiday weekend, we’d probably better toss in a quick Monday forecast, eh? W 10-13 or maybe 13-16.

Okay, a couple of kite people things are happening this weekend: there’s a kiter-only swap at Windance from 5 to 8 on Saturday night, and there’s a kite season party, sponsored by 2nd Wind, at River City on Saturday night from 8 to 10.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

No, I don’t feel like forecasting snow today.

Random Morning Thoughts

We each have a lot of different domains in which we function: family, work, friend circles, partner relationship, recreation circle, etc. Sometimes something will come up in one of those domains, and it will tend to dominate our thought process across all our domains, interrupting our ability to be present with what we’re doing or to take pleasure in other venues in our life. I’m not sure what causes one issue to leak out of one domain into another, but I suspect it has something to do with how deeply we identify with the thing. It may also have to do with the issue at hand being linked to childhood stuff, meaning it’ll be linked in our mind to all sorts of neural networks… But that’s beside my point…

It’s important to recognize when something that arises in one domain is affecting us across seemingly unrelated domains. For example, if you’re having an issue with a coworker, and it’s stuck in your head while you’re doing a paddle downwinder, there’s more going on than just a coworker conflict.

When things like this happen, it’s a great time for self-reflection. You can ask yourself, “Hmm… what else does this remind me of? What other memories come up? What emotions? What impulses do I have in regards to this thing that’s troubling me?” Now, that’s not a great thing to be doing while you’re trying to enjoy your downwinder, but if you can’t get the coworker conflict out of your head, you’re more likely to make progress by exploring, rather than ruminating. And you might even get to take some pleasure out of your paddle through the beautiful Gorge.

Aren’t we lucky to have this amazing playground in our backyard? Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly cloudy outside my window as I write this, but the clouds have been decreasing over the hour I’ve spent working on the forecast. Anyway, expect a partly cloudy day with just a few sprinkles. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 65% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks partly cloudy. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. .05% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks partly cloudy early and sunny late with a chance of sprinkles early. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Strong westerlies. 4% chance of rainbows. Monday looks sunny and warmer.

Road and Mountain Biking

It sprinkled just the tiniest little bit at my house this morning, not enough to impact the trails. That said, the dirt is still quite good out in the woods, and you might as well get yourself some before summer heat returns next week. One additional piece of trail information: the Superconnector is supposedly open. The full list of open trails is here. In road biking news, I would aim for Saturday morning for light wind. Monday morning looks good too. Tuesday looks like a great day to ride to Portland.

Upcoming Events

Every Friday morning at 7am (while I’m writing the forecast), you can go for a 4 mile jog at Kickstand Coffee and get a free cup of coffee and a donut. You can also go for a group jog in Post Canyon on Saturday morning at 8am, earning you nothing more than burned calories. This weekend’s events include downhill mountain bike racing at Skibowl Friday through Sunday. Skibowl’s Adventure Park is open, and is free for active duty military Saturday through Monday. There’s a catfish derby in The Dalles Saturday and Sunday. The Color Dash Run happens in North Bonneville on Saturday and the Lewis and Clark 12/24 hour bike race is in Hockinson Saturday. Sunday is the Sisters Stampede mountain bike race.

Other events this weekend include a kiter-only swap at Windance on Saturday evening from 5pm to 8pm. That’s followed by 2nd Wind’s kite season kickoff party at the River City from 8pm to 10pm. That’s at River City, yo, not at 2nd Wind like I said yesterday and on the radio today – their original email didn’t include a location, just info, and I made an assumption. You know what happens when you do that…

In other news, there’s a special guest monk giving a special guest lecture at Yoga Samadhi on Sunday night at 6:30. Yeah, this is Buddhism, but it’s also just-plain-mindfulness. So, if you want to do some meditation and learn something cool about your mind-body, be at Samadhi on Sunday night.

Have an awesome day today!
