Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

We did get a dusting of snow out of the tail end of yesterday’s system when the snow level dropped. We’ll see another dusting for Friday. Mostly cloudy sky and morning flurries give way to sunshine in the afternoon and clear sky overnight. The snow level will be 3500′ for this 24 hour period. The mountain will receive an inch or so of snow today. Wind will be W 25 in the morning, dropping to SW 10 in the afternoon and evening.

Saturday starts off clear, turns cloudy mid-morning, and sees drizzle in the afternoon and evening. The snow level will be 3500′ early and 9000′ or so with the incoming weather system. Around 1/4” to 1/3” rain will fall between 1pm Saturday and 4am on Sunday. Wind will be SW 10 early, SW 25 in the afternoon, and SW 40+ overnight.

Sunday starts off with a burst of heavy rain followed by a little bit of snow mixed with sunshine in the afternoon and partly cloudy to clear sky overnight. The snow level will be 8000′ with the bulk of the precipitation and 3500′ in the afternoon and evening. About 1/2” rain will fall between 4am and 9am, after which an inch or two of snow will fall. Wind will be SW 40+ early and WSW 35 mid-morning through the afternoon. The wind will drop to light-and-variable overnight.

Monday looks sunny on the mountain with clouds in the evening leading to snow Tuesday morning. The free air freezing level Monday will be 2500-3500′. Light wind early builds to W 20 in the afternoon and WSW 25-30 after midnight. As of right now, it looks like the mountain will see about 4” of snow on Tuesday and 4-6” of snow on Wednesday, but that’s a really long ways out to be predicting.

Random Morning Thoughts

Today, depending on your perspective, is either Black Friday or Buy Nothing Day. Rather than taking a black-or-white stance on shopping today, I encourage you to make this “Reflect on Buying Day”.

Sometimes we make purchases reflexively, buying because we want the latest and greatest gadget. This might bring us happiness for a bit, but we know it doesn’t work in the long term, simply buy the fact that we’ve purchased the latest-greatest repeatedly in the past. I don’t mean to judge this as good or bad. It’s simply an opportunity for reflection.

Before you make that next purchase, stop to reflect on what you’re hoping to gain. What need are you hoping to meet by posessing the object of your desire? Is it practical? Emotional? Physical? Will having that object really satisfy that need? Once you’ve done a little reflection, pull out your credit card or not, as you choose. You’ll have learned something about yourself either way.

If you happen to be someone participating in “Buy Nothing Day”, reflect on that. What emotion drives you to participate? Anger, frustration, gratitude, autonomy, freedom? You’ll learn something there too. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Friday, you can expect west wind at 10-15 through the entire Gorge in the morning with light westerlies in the afternoon. Saturday sees a quick rise to E 30-40 near Rooster Rock with 20-25 near Stevenson and 15-20 near Viento. The easterlies will last all day, but it will also be raining in the afternoon.

Sunday starts off with E 15-20. As a frontal weather system moves through, strong and gusty west wind will blow through the entire Gorge. Expect gusty, inconsistent, 30+ out of the west between 9am and 2pm. It’s probably going to be raining west of Hood River, so plan on making it at least that far east. For the most consistent wind, you’ll want to find the most consistent sunshine. If you want the eastern Gorge wind, you’ll probably want to drive preemptively. Monday looks like very light west wind.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

It is way, way too wet and muddy to ride. If you ride, you will damage trails. Please, please don’t. You could try some gravel roads or a rails-to-trails such as the Klickitat or Deschutes. Mark your calendars for the HRATS annual fundraiser at Double Mountain on December 14th.

Upcoming Events

Today is Buy Nothing Day, the international day of protest against consumerism. As always, the Kickstand Coffee run is Friday morning at 7am: jog or walk 4 miles and get a free cup of coffee and a donut. There’s a trail run Saturday morning at 8am in Post Canyon.
