Friday. RAINBOWS!!! And wind, and good dirt.

DSC_3361
It was already windy out there this morning as I was writing the forecast, but I was struggling to get it done. It wasn’t FOMO. It’s the fact that this time of year, the rainbows are no longer directly in front of my window. They appear in the west, and I have to stand up from my desk to look at them. This keeps me from getting the forecast done. Anyway, today looks like a windy day. Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Expect clouds and rain from Stevenson to Hood River this morning, for westerlies at 10-13 or so. From Bingen to Doug’s, under partly cloudy sky, you’ll find 14-18. Marine clouds have made it, in some form, past Maryhill, so you’ll find gusty 22-25 there this morning with 26-30 at Arlington.

The clouds should start to burn back later this morning, and as that happens, we’ll see the wind climb to 14-18 from Stevenson to Hood River, 25-29 from Rowena to Arlington (maybe Mosier too, and it has reopened), with the steadiest wind likely way out east. That said, the wind will drop off at Arlington after 3pm. The longest lasting wind will likely be from Rowena to Rufus, but I’m not placing any money on the direction being good at the Wall.

Because this weekend is CGWA’s Beach Bash, it’s inevitable that it won’t be windy. Even so, you can still head to the Event Site to check out SUPs and poleboards all day Saturday and Sunday. $10 for members, $20 for non-members. Windance has a kite demo, beach party, and BBQ planned for the Hood River Sandbar on Saturday. That’s free.

Looking at Saturday, high pressure builds inland, shutting down cross-Cascade gradients. Models suggest we’ll start with west wind at 10-13, dropping to nothing midday. That said, models also predict lower temps in Portland than in the Gorge, so it’s possible we’ll hold on to that 10-13 all day.

Sunday’s picture is more clear-cut, with high pressure inland turning gradients easterly. Expect light wind early, E 10-15 at Stevenson and Rooster midday, and E 5 everywhere in the afternoon. Looking ahead to Monday, models are predicting W 26-30. The biggest day in the future looks to be Wednesday, and I’m hoping that stays consistent, because I could actually make that work with my crazy school schedule.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

I woke up this morning (all by myself – catalarm didn’t wake me this morning), and found myself immediately anxious and upset. My world is lovely right now, and I was confused, until I realized that most of my muscles are just a little bit sore from playing at the PSU climbing gym yesterday.

I talked about this a couple of weeks ago, but it’s worth mentioning again, with a bit of a refinement. Our bodies and minds are interwoven. This part here, it’s just a theory, but it’s working for me: Each of us carries stress, loss, and unresolved issues in certain parts of our bodies. Maybe we find that tension in the neck, the lower arms (that’s mine), the upper back…

Anyway, if we go have a hard workout (and you probably enjoy a good workout, don’t you?) and use those tension-spot muscles a lot, we might just activate our emotional patterns associated with those sore muscles. For example: Rock climbing makes my forearms sore, and my forearms happen to be where I carry anxiety. Naturally, I’m anxious this morning. But knowing what’s going on makes me giggle, and laughter and play are good ways to shift emotional states.

The next question, of course, is how we extract ourselves from this confusion of emotions and muscles. Personally, I think emotional tension is incomplete motion trapped in muscles, and those motions need to happen before the tension will go away. But that’s a story for another day. Maybe stretching can help… who knows. It’s worth a try. Let’s all go check it out today and see what happens, just for fun. I bet some of us will cry with the tension release, and crying is cool. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

We received .08” of rain last night, Timberline received 1.77” of rain last night. The low-elevation rain will have a little impact on our dry trails (which were actually in pretty good shape yesterday), but up high, well, it should be awesome. In road biking news, Saturday looks fantastic, with just light west wind, and Sunday looks good too, with light easterlies.

Upcoming Events

This morning’s the Kickstand Coffee run, where you can earn more calories than you burn by jogging 4 miles. Meet at Kickstand every Friday at 7am. The CGWA beach bash gets started today at the Event Site with races and demos by professional windsurfers. The fun continues tonight at the Waterfront Park with a free concert.

Beach Bash continues tomorrow and Sunday with all-day demos at the Event Site. Those are $10 for members and $20 for the public, so it makes sense to join CGWA if you want to take the whole family. Windance has a kite demo and beach party on the Hood River Sandbar today complete with BBQ.

On Saturday in The Dalles, Thompson Park Skate Park has a skateboarding, BMX, and scooter comp from 11 to 2. Portland, while far away, is worth a mention for Pedalpalooza, three weeks of bike-related events, including the World Naked Bike Ride on Saturday.

Have an awesome day today!
