Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

All that nice snow that fell at 5000′ disappeared in yesterday’s rain. So now we’ll start all over with the snowpack building exercise. Expect a few sprinkles on the mountain today. The snow level will be 6500′ in the morning and 6000′ tonight, dropping to 4500′ after midnight. We’ll see around .2” water value (WV) in this 24 hour period. That’ll be rain with a few flurries on the tail end. Wind today will be SW 15 or so all day and night. Continued after the chart…

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much to talk about in the Gorge wind forecast as we sit in a winter-like pattern. Expect light and variable wind on Friday with afternoon westerlies at 12-15 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles. Saturday sees light and variable wind in the morning. As an upper level low arrives at the coast in the afternoon, we’ll see easterlies at 20-25 at Rooster and 15-20 at Steven’s Locks. Sunday looks like E 10-15 all day long.

Random Morning Thoughts

As part of my grad program, I see clients on Thursday nights. Counseling, contrary to what many people think, is not just about listening to people’s problems. It’s about creating a place where people feel safe to be vulnerable. Vulnerability met with receptivity creates powerful healing.

Creating a safe space sounds like an easy task, but it’s often not. We humans impact each other’s nervous systems on deep, unconscious levels. This is, in part, why we’re not always the best listeners – we go into problem solving mode or defensive mode or rebuttal mode when another person’s story interacts with our own experiences.

Learning to be aware of this process requires moment-to-moment awareness and post-conversation reflection. We counselors do this as part of our growth. If you’re interested in being a better listener and an all-around more grounded human being, you can do it too!

Next time you are listening to a friend’s troubles, notice if you want to do something other than just listen and convey your understanding. Just notice that impulse and save it for later. When you are alone, reflect upon what your friend shared, and what exactly made you want to fix the situation, change the subject, argue, or do more than just listen. You’ll likely find something interesting out of your own past. You’ll gain insight. Insight is fun! And awesome of course. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Once again, it’s grey and rainy out there. Expect this sprinkle-filled, grey weather to continue all day. Best chance of a break is between 2pm and 7pm. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 14% chance of rainbows. Saturday, although dry, will likely start off dark and grey as the Nothing settles in. Hopefully it’ll burn off enough for afternoon sun. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks wet after 9am, with rain all day long. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 50’s later. Light wind. 4% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Seriously… this is a ridiculous amount of rain we’ve had. The weather right now is more conducive to trail building than to trail riding. Post, I’m sure, is still too wet, but you could try Syncline. Or Kitchen Sink. Or Columbia Hills. In road biking new, you’ll find dry-enough weather on Saturday, even if the clouds never burn off. You may also find a break in the weather on Friday afternoon. Sunday looks too wet for road or mountain biking.

Upcoming Events

It’s Friday morning just before 8am, and that means we’ve all missed the weekly Coffee and Donut run at Kickstand. All you have to do is jog 4 miles at 7am and you get a free cup of coffee and a donut. Perfect! Tonight is the Orionid meteor shower, but you’ll have to go somewhere above the clouds (Timberline?) to watch it. There’s a group trail run at 8am in Post Canyon tomorrow.

Coming up on Saturday, OMSI hosts the annual winter weather conference, where a bunch of meteorologists use pseudo-scientific means to give you a bunch of conflicting winter weather forecasts. But hey, it’s fun, and it’s a fun crowd. 10-12 at OMSI in Portland. As opposed to the OMSI in Hood River or Odell or White Salmon, duh!

Have an awesome day today!
