Random Morning Thoughts

It occurred to me today that I never mentioned to you folks that I changed my name. No, no, not my first name! The rest of it. My given name was Temira Lital Wagonfeld. My name, as of last week, is Temira Amelia Lital. Names are a bit arbitrary – we don’t choose them, and they are given to us by people we didn’t choose, people who may or may not have made a conscious choice to create us. And so, on some level, our names come to us with the burdens of our family history and our family’s choices. But names can be changed, quite easily, to reflect who we’ve become as independent adults.

The person known as “Temira” is one tough cookie who chose to break from family history, and so, in honor of that, Temira stays. But Temira is also mighty adventurous, so she picked the middle name Amelia. Plus, folks can pronounce Amelia, unlike Temira, and that satisfies Temira’s practical side. And Temira kept her previous middle name, Lital, as her last name, because that name is unusual. Like Temira herself. So, hello. My name is Temira Amelia Lital. Nice to meet you. Have an awesome day. And go change your name if you feel like it. It’s fun, easy, and freeing!

Do you find this forecast useful? Hooray! It’s pledge drive month!

Thanks for coming here for your forecast. It’s time for the annual pledge drive! “WHAT?”, you say, “I thought this was free!” It is, but it takes lots of time. It’s my job, and you’re my employers! Here’s the deal: Every day someone has to pledge. If not, no website forecast the next day: only the people on the email list get their forecast. Want on that list? Make a donation. Do I save you gas? Find you more fun? Entertain you? The email list is not $99/year. Not $50/year. No, just $12.34 or more gets you on the list for the next year. Anything over the minimum feeds my coffee and bicycle addictions and makes me feel loved, and god knows we all need to feel loved. Do it via PayPal/CC by clicking on my photo. And thank you so much for your support. Don’t PayPal? You can send a check to PO Box 841 in Hood River. Thank you for your support. It means the world to me.

Gorge Wind

It’s a light start to the day here in the Gorge, with the wind at less than 10mph at all locations. A .05 gradient (pdx-dls) suggests we will see a bit of wind today. Expect less than 10mph through mid-morning, picking up to 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier late morning and picking up to 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles after 2pm.

Tomorrow looks very similar to today: a light wind start slowly works its way up to 17-20 after 2pm from Stevenson to The Dalles. Sunday feels the effects of a weak weather system passing through. We’ll see 10-13 (or less) for much of the day from Swell to Mosier, probably filling in at Steven’s Locks late morning, and picking up to gusty 17-21 from Stevenson to The Dalles after 5pm.

P.S. Happy birthday Claire and Aroon.

Gorge Weather

I couldn’t believe it when I looked out my window at 6:30 and saw an inversion cloud. Middle of summer, and there’s an inversion cloud troubling us. Absurd. Ridiculous. Truly offensive. Fortunately, that nasty thing will go away quickly today as the atmosphere mixes a bit. Temps will be in the low 50’s this morning and the upper 70’s this afternoon with mostly sunny sky. Tomorrow looks sunny with temps in the upper 50’s early and low 80’s in the afternoon. Sunday starts off in the upper 50’s with temps in the upper 80’s in the afternoon.

Road and Mountain Biking

BROWN POW, BROWN POW, BROWN POW! Mother Nature gave us half an inch of rain in the valleys, but I’m pretty sure it rained a lot more than that on the 44 Road trails. I’ve never seen Fifteenmile or 450 as perfect as they were yesterday. I heard Post Canyon was off the charts too. So, if you have a chance to ride today, before the sun sends the moisture away, I recommend you do that. And you know what’s really great about all this rain? The fact that we’re going to see some mid-summer chanterelles in a week or so!

In road bike news, we should see relatively light wind the next three days, especially in the morning, so it’s okay to plan some nice long rides.

River Levels / Cheezburger update

The White Salmon is at 2.25′. Cheezburger is very stoked on his winter employment situation, but he would like to take you rafting on the White Salmon this summer, so call Wet Planet and request him. The Klickitat is at 1000cfs. The John Day dam is putting out 180kcfs and The Dalles dam is reading 175kcfs. Columbia river temp is 68.9 degrees at The Dalles Dam.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

If you’re near Stevenson today, check out the Bridge of the Gods Kite Fest pro kiteboarding event and pro windsurfing events happening today. Hopefully happening today, wind permitting. Tomorrow is the amateur kiting event and Sunday is the blowout event from Stevenson to Hood River. Also this weekend, there’s the Gorge Dinghy Invitational with all kinds of sailboat races happening in Cascade Locks.

The Hood River Running Club has a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am tomorrow. There’s free community yoga at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon at 9am on Sunday. Also Sunday, there’s ping pong at the Hood River armory at 3pm ($5), pickup touch rugby at 3pm in Mosier, and the Alternative Ride, cruising from Mountain View Cycles to the cider house in Mosier at 5:30pm.

And of course, the Hood River County Fair is on through Saturday.

Have an awesome day today!
