Friday. Hot, windy weather. Followed by more hot, windy weather.

DSC_2591-Edit
Although it may not look windy out there this morning, and although you may not be expecting any wind with a forecast of 103 degrees, there’s actually a bit of hope for windsports today. Our early gradients weren’t anything to write home about – .03 (pdx-dls) and .12 (eph-dls) – but the wind will pick up during the day. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

You can expect light westerlies at 5-8 early, picking up to 10-13 midday and 13-16 this afternoon. It’ll be windy first near Cascade Locks (happy One-Design racers), then from Viento to Swell, and eventually out to The Dalles late this afternoon.

Tomorrow starts off with 10-13 from Viento to Hood River. The wind will fill in from Cascade Locks all the way to Mosier by late morning. By the afternoon, we’ll have 15-18 at all those locations, and we’ll likely see a late-afternoon burst of 17-20 from Swell to The Dalles, or at least out at the Rowena stretch of the river.

Sunday looks a bit tricky with a slight chance of thunderstorms. That said, we’ll sell 15-18 from Viento to Mosier in the morning, picking up late morning at Cascade Locks and Stevenson. A slow and steady build during the day maxes out at 22-25 from Swell to The Dalles late in the afternoon. Expect 17-21 or a touch more on Monday.

Random Morning Thoughts

Sometimes when I can’t think of what to say in the morning, I cruise Facebook for ideas. This morning, of course, the FB is full of images from yesterday’s Greenpeace protest in Portland. Avoiding drilling in the (mostly) pristine Arctic seems like a great idea today me, especially since we need to figure out how to mitigate the damage caused by consuming fossil fuels before we go looking for more fossil fuels. Have I mentioned yet that this is the hottest year on record for the planet?

Somehow, by some random chain of thought, those protests got me thinking about each of us acting in our own selfish interests, and that got me thinking about helmets. Yeah, helmets.

So often I see people riding bikes or doing windsports without helmets. Or worse, I see people riding bikes with helmets unclipped, or clipped to things not needing protection, like handlebars or backpacks.

When you play helmet-free, you might feel free, and you might think you’re only going to harm yourself. That’s not the case. When you choose to neglect your noggin, you risk impacting your friends and family with your upcoming brain injury. You impact first responders who have to deal with your unconscious body. You impact everyone who hears the story of how you were once a vibrant, engaging human who loved doing sports.

Get yourself a helmet. Buckle it. To your head, not your handlebars. Protect yourself and your loved ones and your larger community. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

If yesterday wasn’t fucking hot enough for you, perhaps today will be. Expect temps in the low 60’s this morning and in the low triple digits this afternoon. It’s perfect weather for swimming! Light wind early, moderate late. Tomorrow starts off in the mid 60’s and climbs to right around 100 degrees with a bit of an increase in humidity. Light wind early, moderate late. Sunday looks muggier but a touch cooler. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and the mid 90’s in the afternoon with moderate wind and a slight chance of thunderstorms in the evening.

Upcoming Events

Other events today include the Kickstand coffee run, leaving 13th and State every Friday morning at 7am. Do the run – it’s only 4 miles – and you get a free cup of coffee and a donut. Coming up this evening, there’s a campfire song circle at 7 at Rooster Rock. The movie How to Train your Dragon shows free at Cascade Locks marine Park tonight at dusk. If you can’t make that movie, Third Man on the Mountain shows at Jackson Park in Hood River tomorrow night.

There’s a windsurf race in Hood River at the Event Site tomorrow, a sustainability shindig at Meadows, and a garden party at Pacific hermitage in White Salmon. If you come to the garden party, you’ll get to garden, demolish, drink iced tea and chat philosophy. Finally, there’s a running race at Timberline on Sunday.

In Cascade Locks today, tomorrow, and Sunday, you can watch sailboat races at the One-Design Championships. Some of the best sailors in the country will be there, so it’s worth the drive. While you’re there, have a malted milkshake at the East Wind Drive-in.

Have an awesome day today!
