Friday. Heat, humidity, and humanity.

DSC_3327_HDR
There’s not much wind out there this morning, with the exception of some downslope drainage wind near Doug’s, so the road bikers will be numerous and happy. With high pressure offshore and low pressure in the desert, we’ll see the gradients, and thus the wind, increase this afternoon. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

By early afternoon, we’ll have westerlies at 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River. Models suggest we’ll see a late afternoon bump to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles. I suspect what we’ll really see is 21-24 at Stevenson with gusty 17-20 at Viento, Swell, Mosier and the Rowena stretches of the Columbia.

Tomorrow looks like a more stable weather setup. We’ll start off with westerlies at 12-15 near Hood River. They’ll rise to 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier by noon, and perhaps pick up a touch more late in the afternoon while filling in out to Doug’s.

At this point, it’s looking like Sunday will be a pretty light wind day, with 5-10 early and 10-13 late. Monday, however, with a big cooldown, holds the potential for 30+. That’s assuming thunderstorms don’t have an adverse impact. I am going to clear my Monday. I’m going to recommend you do too, just in case.

Random Morning Thoughts

I sat here and started at the screen for a long time this morning trying to come up with something to say. I sat and sat and didn’t come up with anything. That’s hard for me, because lately I’ve found myself wanting to be perfect and brilliant and put together all the time. And guess what? I’m not and I never will be!

Achieving perfection is impossible for any of us over the long run. We might create perfection in writing or action or spirituality or baking or sporting or in any other venue at some point, but it’s unsustainable. We forget that sometimes, and beat ourselves up for being imperfect.

I’m not in a mood to tell you to celebrate your mistakes and your humanity; that may be the most helpful response to imperfection, but I’m not feeling it right now. But I can remind myself and you to accept that you cannot be perfect. Notice when you beat yourself up for your imperfections. And if you can’t be forgiving of yourself, at least notice what’s going on and sit with that awareness. May you experience perfection occasionally, and may you be kind to yourself in your imperfect humanity.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s another sunny morning, and there are a few little fluffy convective clouds sticking around. I think they’re cute; they make me smile. We’ll see increasing clouds as the day goes on with a slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the mid 80’s this afternoon with relatively high humidity. Light wind early, moderate wind late. No rainbows.

Tomorrow looks mostly sunny with a lesser chance of thunder. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind, no rainbows. Sunday starts off clear and ends up cloudy as a weather system approaches. Models currently show very high t-storm potential to the south of us, but maybe those will move closer as we get closer to Sunday?

Anyway, expect light wind on Sunday and no rainbows. We’ll move into a pattern with better rain chances starting Monday, and that will increase the rain and rainbow chances through the middle part of next week. Thank goodness. We need rain.

Road and Mountain Biking

Just to clarify – Seven streams is still technically open to downhill traffic as of now, but we’d really like to encourage you to switch to the Kleeway if you’re an adult rider. Kids or rank beginners are welcome to take Seven Streams down, but the intent of the Kleeway (as set by the Hood River County Recreation Trails Committee) was to create two one-way trails; there was just too much potential for collisions and injuries with the increased amount of traffic on Seven Streams. So ride the radness down, and let the uphillers have the old trail. And remember: uphill traffic does have the right of way.

Road bikers, it’s going to be hot and muggy the next few days in the afternoon, so ride early. We’ll also have westerly breezes in the afternoon the next two days, so that’s more incentive to ride early. Sunday looks like a light wind day, assuming nothing changes between now and then.

Upcoming Events

Today’s Friday, and every Friday is a chance for you to earn a free coffee and donut by doing a 4 mile run from Kickstand Coffee. You probably won’t burn off all the calories, but it’s nice to get a reward for working out.

There are a few events tomorrow. There’s a fundraiser shuttle day at the Cold Creek trail, there’s the Hood 2 River Relay, and there’s Gorge Cup windsurfing races happening at the Event Site. CGWA has a work party at Rowena from 9 to noon. There’s also a trail run at Post Canyon at 8am and pickleball at Westside Elementary at 9:30am.

Coming up Sunday, Big Winds has free standup paddle lessons and demos at their new Event Site center at various times on Sunday. Give them a call for the details. Sunday’s also a 1k, 5k, and 10k run in White Salmon to benefit Mt. Adams Parks n’ Rec. Speaking of community sports, registration is now open for the summer Gorge Ultimate Frisbee league. It’s $40 for the summer. Click through to get signed up.
