Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast finally contains some snow! It also contains a lot of maybes depending on the exact track of incoming weather systems. For Friday, we’ll see a rapid drop in alpine temps and an inch or two of snow. The snow level will be 10,000′ early, 5000′ around 10am when the precip hits, and 500′ after midnight. The mountain will see about .1” water value (WV) by 4pm, for up to an inch of snow. Another inch or so will fall tonight. Wind will be NW 30 all day long.

Saturday may be clear to start, but the weather will quickly turn cloudy with flurries. The snow level will be 500′ in the morning, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ after midngiht. Another inch or so of snow will fall. Wind will be NW 25 for much fo the day, NW 15 in the afternoon, and NW 25 after midnight.

Sunday’s forecast is tricky. One model suggests a snow level of 4000′, and the other suggests 6500′ or so. Daytime precip on Sunday will be limited and probably drizzly. Overnight precipitation amounts to .6” WV or so with disagreement about the snow level. It’s really going to depend on the exact location of warm air, so we’re going to have to wait and see.

Forecasts for Tuesday night have been consitently showing heavy snow accumlation, so do keep your eye on Wednesday as a possible powder day. The long-range forecast has us going back into a dry spell after the middle of next week, but that could easily change.

Random Morning Thoughts

Most humans have a strong motivation for survival. Sometimes that motivation gets twisted, for example when people feel so threatened by emotions that they consume drugs or alcohol to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Avoidance can be limiting – when we stop doing things that make us nervous or cause anxiety, we restrict our engagement with life. Slowly we become more set in our routines, our natural sense of caution insidiously keeping us stuck.

What’s the answer to this? Trying new stuff. For example, my friend Jerry and I tore apart a corner of my house yesterday and removed a useless decorative fireplace. Why did Jerry help? Because I was too nervous to do it alone!

Sometimes we need the support of a friend or mentor to try something new. When we do, we learn that the anxiety that precedes the unknown is normal and not necessarily a sign of danger. We can learn to embrace our nervousness and even know that it is likely a signal of future triumph, accomplishment and confidence. But if we allow nervousness to silence us, we’ll miss out on many of life’s marvels. Lean into your anxiety rather than listening to it. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Expect east wind near Rooster Rock at 30mph early, fading to calm by 10am. We’ll have west wind at 18-22 between Cascade Locks and Avery after 11:30am. Saturday looks like W 10-13 in the western Gorge all day. Sunday looks like a light wind day with a chance of W 15-18 east of The Dalles. River temp is 44 degrees.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s cloudy out there this morning, and temps are hovering around freezing. I do believe we’ll see a trace to 1/10” freezing rain today before things warm up to the mid-40’s later. East wind early. West wind after 11am. 56% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks whoery after 10am with sunbreaks all day. Watch out for icy roads in the morning. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. 99% chance of rainboars. Sunday looks cloudy with light sprinkles all day and rain after 9pm. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 40’s in the afternoon. Light westerlies. 68% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

If you get under the canopy, you’ll find some nice hard-frozen trails. However, we’re going to see warmer temps and more sunshine over the weekend, which will make for very sloppy conditions on trails exposed to open air. Leave them be, or you will damage them and coat your bike in mud. In other news, the Cold Lap mixed surface ride is every Saturday at 3pm at Dirty Fingers.

Upcoming Events

It’s Friday, and there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run every Friday morning at 7am: jog or walk 4 miles and you get a free cup of coffee and a donut. Saturday is the Locals Only sale at Big Winds – screaming deals on a good portion of the items in the shop. It’ll also be a great opportunity to socialize.
