Friday. Cold, crisp and clear. Ad infinitum.

I heard that Timberline had to shut down their lifts yesterday due to wind (no surprise there – the easterlies are rough on that resort). As of 6:19am, the T-Line conditions page had all the lifts marked as “closed for the day” with no explanatory text. I’m not sure what that means, but I think it means “call before you drive”. I talked to someone up there, and they’re thinking the wind will drop enough today to get the lifts running. Daisy, Buttercup, and Easy are scheduled at Meadows (with a bit of Nordic too). Meadows does better in easterlies, and they (by “they”, I mean I) are reporting no wind issues this morning. Skibowl has tubing today and tonight. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

The weather on Mt. Hood today will be sunny. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be at the surface early and around 1000′ this afternoon with temps at 5000′ peaking in the upper 20’s or low 30’s. Wind today will be NE 20 in the morning, picking up to NE 25-30 in the afternoon with stronger wind possible at T-Line (they take the brunt of the easterlies, for some reason).

Tomorrow looks clear and sunny on Mt. Hood with slightly warmer weather. It’s looking like a stronger inversion will set up, with temps rising to the mid 30’s between 4000′ and 8000′. Wind tomorrow will be NE 25 all day long. Sunday also looks sunny and above freezing. Temps will be in the mid 30’s between 3000′ and 8000′ in the morning, with the free air freezing level at 8000′ in the afternoon. Wind on Sunday will be NE 15-20 in the morning and E 10 in the afternoon.

Yesterday’s GFS run predicted rain and/or snow for Monday. That’s disappeared from the picture. The GFS now says partly cloudy on Monday with the FAF at 6500′ early and 4000′ in the afternoon. The next chance of precip is now Wednesday morning, but it’s looking really warm. A second system predicted for Thursday looks 50/50 for snow v. rain.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have a big ol’ east gradient this morning, .19 (pdx-dls), and easterlies in the mid 30’s at Stevenson and Rooster. You can expect those easterlies to continue all day long in that range. The river water temp is 49 degrees. Expect easterlies at 30-35 tomorrow at Steven’s Locks and Rooster’s Rocks. Expect 30-40mph on Sunday, dropping to 20-25 in the evening.

For those of you wanting to watch the wind speeds at Stevenson, you can check the town’s weather station.

Random Morning Thoughts

Today is Black Friday, no longer the biggest shopping day of the year, and according to a quick Google search, never really the biggest shopping day of the year – that’s the Saturday before Christmas. Today is also Buy Nothing day.

This strikes me as a rather black-and-white way to look at the day after Thanksgiving. Either you make the day about bargain hunting and buying, or you retaliate by purchasing nothing at all. I wonder if we can shift this a little? Yesterday was Thanksgiving, and many of us spent the day feeling grateful for what we have: food, friends, love, and access to the great outdoors. Perhaps we can all take some time today to create gratitude for others.

I’d like to nominate the day after Thanksgiving as Pay it Forward day. Technically that day is April 28th, but that’s a random day and difficult to remember. Black Friday is not.

So, if you are okay spending today, buy a stranger a cup of coffee. Pay the bridge toll for the person behind you. Buy a gift for a holiday toy drive. Give food to the guys and gals at your local on- or off-ramp. Don’t have money to spare? Hand out kind words and hugs – those are free, and just as valuable as objects. Do these things in person, if you can. That will create stronger bonds across our human community, and god knows we need more of that.

When you give gifts, you are not only creating gratitude in the recipient. You create goodwill in yourself. You’re making the world a better place. Pay it forward. Give things away on Black Friday / Buy Nothing Day. Make it an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I just went outside to check the weather, and it’s crisp and cold and clear. Even though my feet were cold, I didn’t want to come inside. It’s going to be a beautiful, sunny day with temps in the mid 20’s early and the low 40’s this afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. The next two days look exactly the same. Then we’ll see some high clouds on Monday. The chance of freezing rain has disappeared from the forecast. The next chance of rain (likely just rain, not freezing rain) is Wednesday morning, unless something changes.

Road and Mountain Biking

I have a few trail reports from yesterday. First, Post is frozen under the trees but freeze-thaw in the exposed sections. Please don’t ride anything that’s not under the canopy, especially the Kleeway. A lot of hard work has gone into these trails, and if you ride them when they’ve thawed, you’ll do significant damage. Next, Syncline. Parts of it are okay, and parts are freeze-thaw. Ride before it thaws, or don’t ride it. Hospital Hill is also in freeze-thaw conditions. I went hiking with some friends yesterday evening, and the mud was quite sticky and slippery. Whoopdee: No, please no. Don’t do it. Better choices: Nestor Peak and the Gorge 400 and perhaps Kitchen Sink.

Upcoming Events

This morning is the Kickstand Coffee run (I think they’re still doing it), where you can jog 4.1 miles and earn a cup of coffee and a donut. There’s a trail run at 8am tomorrow at Post Canyon. Coming up Sunday, there’s free yoga: 9am at Yoga Samadhi and 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles. There’s also pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm and ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30pm.

Have an awesome day today!
