Friday. Chilly start to a fun long weekend!

DSC_4338
It’s another light wind start to the day today, meaning the fishermen are as happy as fish in the water. Fish counts: 26974 Chinook, 3360 Steelhead yesterday. Clearly that belongs in the wind forecast, right? Anyway, expect the wind to pick up just a little by noon, hitting 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier. You can expect 15-18 late in the afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

As an upper level low moves east tonight and high pressure builds off the coast, we’ll have an excellent setup for Gorge wind. The only wrinkle tomorrow is a weather system approaching from the Pacific – that could cause some afternoon unreliability in the wind. So, get it early, or plan on getting it at Doug’s/Rowena. Numbers: Expect 23-27 to start the day tomorrow from Swell to Doug’s. By midday, we should see 28-32 from Swell to Doug’s, possibly at Rufus as well. Arlington will join in later in the day. It’s entirely possible we’ll see some periods of 30+ mixed in there. As that weather system approaches in the afternoon, the wind at Swell, Mosier, and Rufus will likely suffer, while Stevenson, Doug’s and Rowena benefit.

Sunday starts with widespread 10-13 and picks up to 15-18. As of right now, Monday looks like 5-10 early and 13-16 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

Our hearts carry a lot of wisdom about how we can best move through the world, but we don’t always listen to them. Case in point (and I struggled with how to express this without identifying people – details have been altered): I ran into a pothole in my meditation practice last week, and asked my therapist (who’s a meditation teacher as well) how to handle it. He, wanting to keep his teacher self out of the therapy context, suggested I talk to my meditation teacher (they know each other casually). I asked my meditation teacher, and his initial response was to ask if I’d talked to my therapist about this.

I was, and still am, highly amused by this.

What I was experiencing was doubt in my practice and doubt in myself. I know in my heart what I need to do to address what’s happening. However, my approach falls outside the box of traditional meditation practice. So, I questioned my instinct and went looking for reassurance. The lesson here, I think, is to question doubt, rather than myself.

When we find unconventional ways to move through the world, we can be plagued by doubts. Society is telling us to do something different than what our hearts say. I suspect many of us- windsurfers, kiters, skiers, entrepreneurs, car-dwellers – question ourselves at times. If we remain connected to our hearts, if we truly know what brings us peace, contentment, and serenity, and if we’re not harming others, we’ll be okay following our path.

So, when you find yourself experiencing, doubt, question that doubt. Be curious about it. Is it you speaking, society speaking, your parents speaking? To whom does that doubt belong, and what does it have to teach you? Trust in yourself, and have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy and beautiful this morning, and under the high clouds is something not seen in a long while: a little bit of the Nothing! Expect the Nothing to leave as temps warm up from the mid 40’s this morning to the upper 60’s this afternoon. Light wind. Chance of showers/t-showers later, 8% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow looks partly cloudy to start and sunnier as the day goes on. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks partly cloudy with a chance of showers in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind, 9% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went and inspected Post for y’all yesterday. There are still tacky sections of trails in shady areas, but at least 50% has returned to dry with ball bearings. Not to worry. Fall shall come, and with it the tack will return. In the meantime, you could try Plains of Abraham, Falls Creek, or Lewis River. In road biking news, this morning looks good, this afternoon looks okay, and tomorrow looks horrendous. Better road biking returns on Sunday, with lighter wind. Sunday is also the Dirty Sellwood ride out of Dirty Fingers. If you would like to ride 117 miles, 35 on gravel, with 12,000′ of climbing, call the shop.

Upcoming Events

Our weekly Friday event is the Kickstand Coffee Run, 4.1 miles that’ll get you a free coffee and donut. Meet at 13th and State in Hood River at 7am. There’s another coffee and donut run at Post Canyon tomorrow at 8am, and you can demo the super-padded Hoka One shoes at that event.

Also tomorrow, after a windy day on the water, Windance has their end-of=-summer customer appreciation party for both windsurfers and kiters, and they’ll be serving up food, drinks and live music. During the day tomorrow, there’s a garden party at Pacific hermitage. Coming up Sunday, Dirty Fingesr Bikes has the 117 mile Dirty Sellwood ride, and CGWA has the last swap meet of the season, happening at Luhr Jensen. Cascade Locks is hosting sailboat races both days this weekend.

Have an awesome day today!
